Went for a good wander around and found a few P. sub. in a couple of my spots:


Also found two P. semilanceata. By the time I was looking for the liberty caps, it was dark and I was doing it by torch light, so there might've been more, but ohwell, can go back during the day. There was also a bucketload of other mushrooms there that I was hoping were just young, fresh P. sem., although it was pretty apparent they weren't when I found actual P. sem., ahwell:

No the caps all looked fine. It was definitely the "woodlovers paralysis" Stamets talks about.

My theory is that because the seco type mushrooms often have closed caps, molds can grow inside the cap, especially if the sun is hitting them and those molds can be toxic.

Boil your shrooms into tea before consuming.


I have had this paralysis twice with NZ subs when I had a strong Level 4-5 dose (dried, raw) - could not walk and side of face (eyes, mouth) affected - could not speak (articulate) properly and droopy eyes. Came on after 2 - 3 hrs, lasted 6 - 8 hrs, okay next day. I checked out the Stamets woodlovers search terms - below link which summarises symptoms. My worry is that this stroke-like effect could become permanent. Have you heard of permanent damage? Also, this infamous Ted talk "my stroke of genius" is just like a subs trip as some comments admit:

the paralysis is a real thing, Ive had it after consuming in a tea, couldnt get up for what seemed like many hours. Its like the connection between the brain to the legs is just broken completely, not a good feeling.

I found my first few yesterday by a walking track in the bush. I've checked out lots of bark gardens but only found non-actives so far. Keep looking. Hopefully you'll soon be rewarded.

Thanks for that, i feel like ive almost checked all the woodchips in NorthD, i can think of a few more spots though.

I'm in North D and they're definitely around here, so keep at it! They do tend to get picked pretty hard tho. If you have time today and tomorrow, I'd go around all the places you can again, I'm sure some new fellas will be popping up their heads.

Also, don't be afraid to lift up tussocks and such, I've found a fair number growing under them. Also under other bushes, as long as rain can get through and dampen the soil.

They really can... They can be really broadly or hilariously acutely umbonate. Mature subs can be 8mm across, or they can be 50mm across. They can be undulate or smooth margined. Some will bruise blue because you looked at them and others take ages to blue up. Some have chocolate spores, most are dark violet.

Subs also vary in where you find them, I hardly ever find them in wood chips like is shown in so many photos in this thread. Most of my subs are found under and on top of dry grass on grass verges next to walkways. I guess thats why I find so many out my way, everyone else must be looking for them in woodchips.
