P. subaeruginosa is your best bet for hunting as a newbie. Some googling will find you a tonne of information about them.

They grow in wood chips primarily, so look for garden beds that have been mulched with chipped wood. Specifically the wood, bark mulch doesn't seem to produce as well, although checking them won't hurt. You'll especially want to be looking for wood chips that were placed a year or more ago. Freshly placed woodchips are unlikely to have been colonised and be producing fruit. Here's an example photo of the kind of environment they like:

Check out some of the yearly threads for Aussie and NZ to see what the mushrooms look like:

Australia:
I'll note right away that it seems like Aussie is having a pretty meh season, not enough rain and quite warm, from the sounds of it.

New Zealand:
We're having a decent season, but once again not enough rain and a bit warm. Seems better than Aussie tho, so there's a lot more photos in here.

When you find a mushroom you think might be correct:
  • Take a nice photo of the habitat, showing the mushroom in it.
  • Take a clear, well-lit photo of the cap.
  • Take a clear, well-lit photo of the gills.
  • Take a clear, well-lit photo of the stem.
  • Take your mushroom home, cut the cap of the mushroom off the stem and place it gills-down on a piece of paper. After a few hours there will be spores deposited on the paper. This is called a "spore print". Take a clear, well-lit photo of this print.
  • Upload all your photos to here and start a thread asking for ID.

The more extensive your photos of the mushroom, it's characteristics and its environment, the more likely you are to get a good ID from someone here. Also likely the faster you are to get an ID.

Happy hunting!

Your pictured mushrooms are a Cortinarius species. The purple colors are inherent and not a result of bruising.
