The spores were black. Any idea what they could be?

Aw, maybe that was just dirt then. Haha, sorry - I'm new to this. But thank you. It seems they are edible and I found quite a few so I might try cooking them !

If you spore print a white spored mushroom on white paper it is hard to see the spore print. Next time print them on black paper, aluminum foil, or glass.
I generally think that picking and eating wild mushrooms when you are very new to the hobby is a bit of risky business. Although I would feel safe eating the mushrooms pictured, you need to be 100% sure of your ability to identify the mushrooms you are picking. A lot of different species of mushrooms grow on grass, and you don't want to mistake them for edible species.
Although, I really like eating this mushroom! They also dry and rehydrate very well.

I wouldn't eat anything without having it IDed first. I suppose its not wise to trust the opinion of one person, but judging by your post (and post count) I thought I would

I don't think I got my point across very well... What I mean is that a lot of beginners can not confidently distinguish one species from another. So assuming that you were planning to go pick more of the mushrooms pictured, the concern would be that another species is also growing in the grass, and the possibility of getting a mixed collection. Does that make sense?
It is just a word of caution, that is all.

I see mushrooms like that all the time here in Canberra. Once i saw a whole field of them (seriously). At the time i thought they looked active so i was pretty bummed to see the white gills.

Ah okay, fair enough! Perhaps I won't go back then - I did see on wikipedia that there are a species similar in appearance that are poisonous.

I've eaten dried Marasmius oreades in chocolate chip cookies...they were pretty good! I guess they're supposed to be like nuts.
