One for exotics...

One for edibles...
And for grain jars and cucumber sprouts while my oyster bag is colonizing. I need to build an addition on my house.

I Remember the prestro flash sale, Few members still upset it wasn't legit.  Never hurts to try, especially when ebay backs your money. I went for a 5 dollar 501 deal. ordered 10, was fake but had to try. lost nothing.

Presto 50 or suspect.

for grain jars

How are they doing in there? I use polyfill lids and I had mine in my greenhouse, but they started to look really sweaty on the inside (oats) so I took them out. It seemed to increase their colonizing speed, but I didn't want the grains getting over-saturated.

I'm not running a humidifier in that one yet. As soon as that oyster bag is ready to fruit I'll pull the jars out turn the system on. It's just temporary shelf space for now.

So I've been working on reducing my contam rates in my new house. Short version: had 10%~ contam rate at my old place, nothing changed except the move, but went up to 40%~. So I started watching videos and looking over what other people used and I decided to up a few things in my SAB. First a proper torch for flame sterlizing!

Have you tried moving the SAB in to a small room with nothing in it? Like an empty closet? Not having air moving around is very helpful as well.

Wipe down the surfaces with some Lysol wipes, put covers over your holes, spray down the SAB (inside and out) with ISO 70, Lay down a cloud of Lysol in the SAB and then in that room as you back out (hold your breath at that point) with the aerosol pointed at the ceiling so it falls down through the air to the floor.

Take your shower (a "double shower" if you want), and have all your freshly laundered clothing in a clean 5 gallon bucket with each piece having been sprayed with Lysol before putting it in the bucket. Lay a cloud in the bucket when you start and after you finish. Be sure to put your gloves, hairnet, and surgical mask in there on top, too. Get good surgical masks, not just the ones that are like a napkin across your face. The real ones. The ones with the metal bridge nose-piece and the double straps. The hairnet should be the type that is almost a solid fabric and not the ones in the sitcom cafeterias that are basically made of fishnet.

Some people also add a big clear face shield to all of this. The people who are pushing crazy spore load environments wear Tyvek painter suits while working. Josex does a ton of agar work out of a high spore load environment. He does some of this stuff, too. He also pushes technique HARD. Like he practices getting better at minimal transfer movements and a bunch of neat tricks that he has to keep things from getting contaminated.

Before you shower and put on your bucket gear be sure to floss, rinse, and brush your teeth thoroughly.

Veterinary gloves with rubber bands on the end worn over your regular gloves will add a layer of protection, and if you want to live on the edge and do things in a short sleeved shirt then they are a must have. They also make for great covers over SABs with "port holes". You can fold the ends back over on themselves and secure them with rubber bands. They will act as covers to hold that Lysol and alcohol vapor in while you are getting things ready. At first glance people will think it's a glove box until you put your arm all the way in one side and snap that rubber band off the end and it's securely fixed on your entire arm. Then the other arm. If you do use those like that then be sure to pull on the excess past the rubber band and turn it to the outside of your arm as you do so. That way the gloves won't be loose around your thumbs (like they like to get... very annoying). Be sure to spray one arm down with ISO 70 (from a spray bottle) and wipe the other hand down it front and back, and then use the first arm to wipe the other down. Be sure to ISO your arms any time they come out of / go in to the SAB.

I advise wearing Underarmor under a long sleeved work shirt and jeans. They make Tyvek booties if you're ultra concerned. Your costs are going to go up but your infection rates will go down.

And this is why we need flow hoods... lol.

So, I moved into a studio appartment, no small rooms, just one small place. I think I got it under control, last pour was 0 contams. Feeling more confident, doing the work that I can... and yes to the flow hood, likely will be seeing something like that soon!

The kits at Walmart have a jar opener and grabber, with a funnel perfect for jars. And other littler jaring knick knacks

I've found that using a very light grip and slow twist on stubborn rings works very often. I figure older rings are slightly warped and when you squeeze hard and turn, the imperfection just kind of gets "caught" and can't turn freely. But if you use a light grip and go in a circle trying new angles every 1/8" or so, you'll catch it and open it right up.

AA25 I picked up for $150. Owner used it to sterilize tattoo stuff. They'd had it for 7 years I think, but only used it a few times per year. Don't think they bought it new, but what a deal. I had them send pictures verifying it hit above 15PSI and they did.

Going to read the manual later tonight and figure out how to use it. I have a bunch of threads saved as well as I know I need to modify something in there to fit maximum capacity. First time with stopcock as well. Doesn't have a stand, but I heard folks use patio bricks instead so I'll look into that tonight, too.

If anybody has some things I should double check on the unit before running it, especially WRT to safety, I'm all ears. Going to replace over-pressure plugs on all my units soon and keep the currents as back-ups.

About 6 months ago I also got a brand new, in box, never used AA921 for $120. The only issue was the owner was a heavy smoker so the box was stained yellow and the unit stank horribly. But a quick deep scrub got the smell off the unit and it works great.

Finally got me a mini-fridge without a fucking freezer! 4.4 cubic foot Danby. This model is usually like $180-$220 new, but scored this for $80. Going to put in some older dishes soon and keep testing the temperature. So far the coldest setting is reading 45F and I'd like it a bit colder. I've found many posts on home brewer's boards dealing with this issue, as well as cold/warm spots that are common in fridges, i.e., door is warmer, but top and back area is colder. Many of them wired up small CPU fans to keep the air circulating and evenly cold. I might have to try that!

That is a great deal!  I ordered parts (pressure release and gauge) for mine a couple of times now, had it for many years and I prefer to be on the safe side too.  The pressure relief (which I haven’t changed yet) is now a weighted style instead of the petcock.  That’s holding me back 😝 I’m sure it’s better or they wouldn’t change it but I’m just resistant. I’m not sure if it’s the same on the 25x.  I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to fill them to max.... new to me.
