First time BRF cakes .
    #25624678 -

So basically I'm doing my first ever brf cake grow, I started off with about 4 jars a month and a bit ago, one stalled and eventually got contaminated and the other three all looking nice and healthy, one one the three seems to be fully colonized but I'm not sure tbh,So I'd like some input from you guys about whether it's ready to be birthed ( and how long do you think left on the other two cakes)

Thanks,  any help is much appreciated !👌

Why you flipping your jars? Defeats the object of the verm layer at the top. The second jar looks dodgy, but could just be the photo. The first doesn't look fully colonised

Thanks for the reply, I read on this site that flipping them can speed up the rate of colonization sometimes if they seem like they are about to stall , so I just tried it out to see last night , should I not keep them flipped ? Or flip them back up?

And yeah so I might leave that one for about another week then till it's fully colonized.

Next time fill the jars all the way up and then add a semi tight verm layer to close it off. You've got too much dead space in those jars and it also looks like they're badly contaminated.

I'm not actually quite sure why that one is now taking up only half the jar , I feel like it's shrunk because originally that one was filled to the top, it seems as the mycelium has grown it's shrunk up the cake in size..

And as for contamination I really hope not u will have to give them a good look but I think those pictures are just

Leave it flipped. I flip my jars but only when the very bottom of the jar stalls out and it usually finishes colonizing when I flip it.. i read all the time that it’s a bad idea but it works for me so

I've never had a jar stall out of at least 200 BRF cakes. I just don't see what would cause them to stall if the solution is to flip them? gravity? But they weigh like a fraction of a qt of grain and I ain't never seen anyone flip a grain jar to get it to colonize the bottom

I say BRF jars don't need to be flipped :eatingout:

I’ve had jars that colonized 90% in about two weeks and the bottom showed no signs for the next two weeks. Flipped and dislodged the bottom from the glass and it finished colonizing the next week. I’m definitely no expert but like I said it’s worked for me. I wouldn’t by no means do it just to speed colonization times but if I have a stalled jar I’ll give it a flip.

Maybe the jars would have taken 1 month to colonize either way flipped or not?

BRF mix in a 1/2 pint jars weighs very little. The last portion of the mix can honestly not be relied of so much pressure and weight that suddenly when flipped the myc suddenly has 'strength' to colonize it. I just don't buy this theory it doesn't make sense to me, assuming that myc is that weak

On the other hand what happens all the time is that the dry verm layer falls down the sides of the jar when the BRF substrate shrinks. And at times it can resemble uncolonized BRF mix but it's really just dry verm that has fallen into the cravice created by the shrinking substrate.

Hey man either way it didn’t hurt me in the end when I did flip them. Lol I just don’t want him to worry about his jars being ruined because he flipped them, it’s never ruined any of my jars. Btw love your humidity chamber tek it’s been my go to for cakes ever since I found it

I get what youre saying man :super:

I'm just saying that if the weight of a 1/2 pint cake hinders myc from colonizing the bottom then growers would never be able to colonize bigger cakes hehe, but we know colonizing bigger cakes is not an issue. Also cakes would stall much more often if this was the case. But this happens rarely so I have to asume it's something else.

I would like to think that bad BRF mix preparation is to blame in cases of myc not being able to colonize certain parts.

Thanks for all the input guys I'm not sure myself if flipping the jars does any good or does more harm than good, but I'm going to give them a few days flipped just to see if I get any new exponential growth.

So my one jar that I have pictured by itself, feels like it's fully colonized as it started off full and stuck to the jar, and now it seems to have shrunk up and can freely move around in the jar (not stuck to the sides anymore) so I can only assume it's either fully colonized , or getting very close.. dose anyone have any idea what this slight shrinkage means ?

Thanks

I agree with you on the bad mixing part because some parts seem to be clumped up while other parts are nice and fluffy, I guess that's what's causing then to stall as the myc doesn't seem to wanna colonize those areas ..

:whathesaid: If you flip them how are they getting good gas exchange? Probably not a real concern, but still.

It means myc has colonized the cake and thus 'knitted' it tighter together and at the same time expelled water and eaten away at it. It's probably a mix of all factors. But that cake will absorb a third of its weight I'm water after a 24h dunk.

Here is a visual representation of how much one of my cakes absorbed in a day.

Ah I see that makes sense to me , so I should really be dunking this little guy soon and get him ready for birthing.

&Nice looking cake man.

So I have decided to dunk the one that looks fully colonized and sure enough when I took it out the jar it looked nice and colonized all round. This is my first attempt at dunking now I've washed the verm off the cake carefully with cold tap water, and dropped the cake in a large bowl filled with chilled water, put the container in a dark cupboard now for 24 hrs   anyway here are some pics .. !
