NY Democrats subsidize corporate Amazon
    #25617745 -

Isn't it a little strange how democrat leaders would love to help out a corporate powerhouse by giving them billions of dollars in tax breaks? What about principle, anti-1%, and anti-tax cuts?

"New York promised Amazon $1.525 billion in incentives, including $1.2 billion over the next 10 years as part of the state’s Excelsior tax credit. The state also pledged to help Amazon with infrastructure upgrades, job-training programs and even assistance “securing access to a helipad” — none of which came with a price tag."

I'm no fan of corporate welfare but it's 63% less than republicans spent on foxconn, and unlike Foxconn will actually result in jobs.

The Republicans are worse, so it's okay now?

Is that how the Democrat principles work? As long as their trickle down works better than Republicans, it's okay?

Shouldn't you be holding to your principles? Like offering to tax the owner/Amazon most of his income and in return redistributing the money to New Yorkers?

What about building the factory in NY then raising the minimum wage to $30?

If you hadn’t made it about Democrats then you could actually use that high road argument, but that’s not what you did.

I'm not okay with any subsidies.

And this is about Democrats. The governor (D) of NY is guiding this deal.

no, it's not strange; it's routine for establishment political leaders, both democrat and republican, and corporate welfare sucks no matter who is doing it.  there is a time and place where it is sometimes, very rarely, necessary--think preventing a second great depression--but this isn't one of those occasions.

it's strange you'd categorize this behavior as strange unless you just started paying attention to politics.  it's completely routine that politicians kick back to those who spend the most 'free speech' in support of their campaigns.

**edit:  i sort of combined, in error somewhat, the idea of establishment politicians helping those who help them to be elected by giving back to those corporations with this sort of deal.  it's not a completely accurate comparison but the points stand.  forgive me for letting my anger and frustration at the situations in general make me stretch a bit in making my points.

yes.  while VA didn't offer a package as rich as NY, and not NEARLY what MD and NJ were offering which were packages ranging from 7 to 8.5 billion dollars, VA still ponied up.  i think VA did it in a lot more equitable way but i still don't really agree with these types of deals in general.

Virginia, my home state, offered a package with about $800 million in public incentives that includes the following:

Quote:
From the commonwealth of Virginia, it includes:

Workforce cash grants totaling up to $550 million for the 25,000 new jobs, or $22,000 per new job that's created with a wage of at least $150,000. That's considered the first phase of hiring. Amazon is eligible for another $200 million in grants if it creates an additional 12,850 new jobs beyond the initial 25,000.
$295 million of nongeneral fund money in infrastructure investments, including new entrances to the Crystal City Metro station and the to-be-built Potomac Yard Metro station, improvements to Route 1, a pedestrian bridge connecting Crystal City and Reagan National Airport and a transitway expansion that serves all of National Landing.

From Arlington County, it includes:

An annual performance cash grant totaling $23 million across 15 years tied to Amazon's ability to meet office occupancy targets for 6 million square feet in that time. Those funds come from up to 15 percent of the county's Transient Occupancy Tax, which a tourist and traveler tax for rooms or other lodging they rent in local hotels, motels or homes. Five percent of the tax goes to directly to the county's general fund while .25 percent goes to the agency that promotes tourism.
$28 million in tax-increment financing across a projected 10 years, based on 12 percent of future property tax revenue expected from Amazon. The county said it would use that funding toward improving streetscapes, community parks, on-site infrastructure and open space in National Landing.

If the govt is going to waste money, I'd rather they waste $1.5B than $4.1B.
If your intent was to lead this into a discussion of redistribution of wealth (which I've never advocated), minimum wage, and discredited economic theory why not just start there instead of taking a roundabout path?

Because we are chatting and it popped in my mind.

I am glad to hear you don't support massive redistribution of wealth.

I see. That's not to say I think corporations and the wealthy currently pay their fair share to keep the lights on. Some may, it probably depends on their effort and success in gaming the system.

In cases like Amazon and Foxconn they play states and cities against each other and those fools go all out to outdo each other with giveaways.

Right, fuck off with that XUL. This is a completely bipartisan issue and you're trying to spin it. Why do you only care about the NY deal where it involves a democrat and none of the others that involve republicans?

Or the corporate environment that allows for exploitation of local markets to subsidize their company model. These companies hold areas hostage to get incentives.

Classic western thinking of bitching about the symptoms and ignoring the cause. Of course both sides are bought out, that is why our republic is in the horrible condition it is in.

Wrong.

Calm down there tough guy.

I already denounced subsidies, which includes republican deals.

Why is this a Democrat issue? Because the news story is about NY and Amazon.

Sorry to hear about your party betraying itself. It happens all around.

Democrats and Republicans are both capitalist political parties. Do you think this is the first time Democrats have given out corporate welfare or something? This isn't a gotcha moment, because it most certainly isn't "a little strange how democrat leaders would love to help out a corporate powerhouse by giving them billions of dollars in tax breaks".

Corporate subsidies are not a party issue, they are just another way the capitalist class robs the working class.

Now that this is established, and as you obviously are concerned about this issue, what are your suggestions to stop corporate welfare?

This is standard behavior. Local governments do this all the time and every single bidder for amazon headquarters offered billions in tax relief

I think this issue is revealing.

With all the talk of Democratic socialism, we can clearly see that it's not happening. Like the Democrats pointing out the errors of Trump, I am revealing an inconsistency.

Further, this thread may not apply to you. For instance, someone else other than you might support subsidies, which might spark a debate.

The world doesn't revolve around you.

Every local government offers subsidies to large businesses to lure them to their town. This has nothing to do with democrats or republicans.
