NY Democrats subsidize corporate Amazon
    #25617745 -

Isn't it a little strange how democrat leaders would love to help out a corporate powerhouse by giving them billions of dollars in tax breaks? What about principle, anti-1%, and anti-tax cuts?

"New York promised Amazon $1.525 billion in incentives, including $1.2 billion over the next 10 years as part of the state’s Excelsior tax credit. The state also pledged to help Amazon with infrastructure upgrades, job-training programs and even assistance “securing access to a helipad” — none of which came with a price tag."

I'm no fan of corporate welfare but it's 63% less than republicans spent on foxconn, and unlike Foxconn will actually result in jobs.

The Republicans are worse, so it's okay now?

Is that how the Democrat principles work? As long as their trickle down works better than Republicans, it's okay?

Shouldn't you be holding to your principles? Like offering to tax the owner/Amazon most of his income and in return redistributing the money to New Yorkers?

What about building the factory in NY then raising the minimum wage to $30?

no, it's not strange; it's routine for establishment political leaders, both democrat and republican, and corporate welfare sucks no matter who is doing it.  there is a time and place where it is sometimes, very rarely, necessary--think preventing a second great depression--but this isn't one of those occasions.

it's strange you'd categorize this behavior as strange unless you just started paying attention to politics.  it's completely routine that politicians kick back to those who spend the most 'free speech' in support of their campaigns.

**edit:  i sort of combined, in error somewhat, the idea of establishment politicians helping those who help them to be elected by giving back to those corporations with this sort of deal.  it's not a completely accurate comparison but the points stand.  forgive me for letting my anger and frustration at the situations in general make me stretch a bit in making my points.

yes.  while VA didn't offer a package as rich as NY, and not NEARLY what MD and NJ were offering which were packages ranging from 7 to 8.5 billion dollars, VA still ponied up.  i think VA did it in a lot more equitable way but i still don't really agree with these types of deals in general.

Virginia, my home state, offered a package with about $800 million in public incentives that includes the following:

Quote:
From the commonwealth of Virginia, it includes:

Workforce cash grants totaling up to $550 million for the 25,000 new jobs, or $22,000 per new job that's created with a wage of at least $150,000. That's considered the first phase of hiring. Amazon is eligible for another $200 million in grants if it creates an additional 12,850 new jobs beyond the initial 25,000.
$295 million of nongeneral fund money in infrastructure investments, including new entrances to the Crystal City Metro station and the to-be-built Potomac Yard Metro station, improvements to Route 1, a pedestrian bridge connecting Crystal City and Reagan National Airport and a transitway expansion that serves all of National Landing.

From Arlington County, it includes:

An annual performance cash grant totaling $23 million across 15 years tied to Amazon's ability to meet office occupancy targets for 6 million square feet in that time. Those funds come from up to 15 percent of the county's Transient Occupancy Tax, which a tourist and traveler tax for rooms or other lodging they rent in local hotels, motels or homes. Five percent of the tax goes to directly to the county's general fund while .25 percent goes to the agency that promotes tourism.
$28 million in tax-increment financing across a projected 10 years, based on 12 percent of future property tax revenue expected from Amazon. The county said it would use that funding toward improving streetscapes, community parks, on-site infrastructure and open space in National Landing.

If the govt is going to waste money, I'd rather they waste $1.5B than $4.1B.
If your intent was to lead this into a discussion of redistribution of wealth (which I've never advocated), minimum wage, and discredited economic theory why not just start there instead of taking a roundabout path?

I see. That's not to say I think corporations and the wealthy currently pay their fair share to keep the lights on. Some may, it probably depends on their effort and success in gaming the system.

In cases like Amazon and Foxconn they play states and cities against each other and those fools go all out to outdo each other with giveaways.

Or the corporate environment that allows for exploitation of local markets to subsidize their company model. These companies hold areas hostage to get incentives.

Classic western thinking of bitching about the symptoms and ignoring the cause. Of course both sides are bought out, that is why our republic is in the horrible condition it is in.

Democrats and Republicans are both capitalist political parties. Do you think this is the first time Democrats have given out corporate welfare or something? This isn't a gotcha moment, because it most certainly isn't "a little strange how democrat leaders would love to help out a corporate powerhouse by giving them billions of dollars in tax breaks".

Corporate subsidies are not a party issue, they are just another way the capitalist class robs the working class.

Now that this is established, and as you obviously are concerned about this issue, what are your suggestions to stop corporate welfare?

Further, this thread may not apply to you. For instance, someone else other than you might support subsidies, which might spark a debate.

CNN:

Amazon HQ2 plans get mixed reaction in New York and Northern Virginia

The victors, New York and Virginia, delivered. The final deals revealed on Tuesday showed they provided total incentives worth about $2.8 billion total — extraordinarily generous offers to a company whose profits in 2017 totaled $3 billion on $178 billion in revenues, and whose founder Jeff Bezos is the wealthiest man in the world.

Jimmy Van Bramer, the New York Council member representing Long Island City, and Michael Gianaris, the area's state senator, were less thrilled.

"Amazon duped New York into offering unprecedented amounts of tax dollars to one of the wealthiest companies on Earth," they wrote in a statement. "It is unfathomable that we would sign a $3 billion check to Amazon in the face of these challenges."

That number only reflects the value of subsidies if Amazon hires the expected 25,000 employees in each location. If the company were to add 40,000 employees, and also win additional New York City tax breaks afforded to all companies that meet certain qualifications, the total amount of subsidies could go as high as about $5.5 billion.

Already, a New York state legislator has signaled he plans to introduce a bill to block the deal by phasing out the economic incentive statutes upon which the agreement is based.

"There is a much better way of allocating our taxpayer's money that will directly help the communities," said New York State Assemblyman Ron Kim

I don't support corporate welfare, but it is something that can't be worked around in our system very easily. Politicians care about short term results, and bringing jobs into their state/city via corporate subsidies is a great way to achieve those.

Republicans and Democrats fall over each other trying to be the first in line to get on their knees for big corporations. A company like Amazon that is valued at almost $1 trillion does not need a mere $4 or 5 billion in tax breaks. In fact, they should be taxed more not less.

If the Democrats continue on this path, we will see more Communist-like candidates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who have little to no real world experience, winning elections based exclusively on emotionally charged rhetoric. This would be terrible for the US economy.

1.  Bernie figured out one way to pay for it:  impose a 2.2% income tax on everyone.  That actually saves the bottom 95% of the country money on their health insurance.  And if the bottom 95% can afford it, the top 5% certainly can afford a 2.2% tax.  It's not even a progressive tax.

Almost half of Americans don't pay income tax because they either don't make enough or don't make anything at all. If half the country isn't paying this 2.2% income tax increase, guess who's going to be picking up the slack? Not the millionaires/billionaires, they will still be able to hire the best accountants and get all their tax breaks. It will be workers like me who make above the poverty line, and the tax hike will be far greater than the 2.2% Sanders proposed since I'd be making up for everyone not paying.

The only way we could make it work is if everyone paid 2.2% regardless of income and possibly raising sales tax to make up for those who make nothing. The money has to come from somewhere, but you can't expect the top 50% of earners to pay 100% of the cost.

The rich would have to pay 2.2% of their income towards Medicare for All, regardless of how good their accounts were.  If not, they've broken the law and pay a fine exceeding 2.2% of their income.  Easy peasy.  Even Cortez could figure that one out.

That's how it could work, EVERYONE pays 2.2%.  People making only $14,000/year would pay about $26 bucks a month for excellent coverage.  It's a bargain.

Bernie Sanders knew that a 2.2% tax on 0 is 0.  He didn't think that a flat income tax was going to collect money from people who have no income.

Exactly.

Wouldn't these people be mostly exempt from income tax though?  The personal exemption is close to that

There is no personal exemption anymore. That was phased out in Trumps tax bill.

I think it's on actual income.  But again, 2.2% of a small income is dirt cheap to get full medical coverage.

So a payroll tax similar to the way FICA works

Except payroll taxes don’t apply to other kinds of income... so maybe not

The Koch brothers ran a study to try to discredit medicare for all. Their conclusion of the study? "Medicare for all would cost us 30 trillion over the next decade!" (I made that specific number up as I do not remember the actual cost). They then ran tv ads and right wing news outlets ran with it. What did they not mention that their very study concluded in black and white? Our current system will cost 34 trillion over the next 10 years. Don't let facts get in the way of a good talking point though am I right?

Cortez couldn't even answer a simple question on how she expects the US government to pay for the Medicare for all plan she supports except to say we will "just pay for it" since she says it's cheaper than what we have now (spoiler: it's not).

2.  It would be a LOT cheaper per person.  We'd no longer have to pay for the uninsured, we'd no longer have to pay for profit private health insurance companies, and we'd get discounts due to significant negotiating power.

Please tell us why you think it would cost more.  That makes no sense to me.

Great post. I think the misunderstanding here comes from the fact that, while it will be cheaper, more tax money will be spent. The American tax payer will be spending money via taxes, that they are currently spending independently. I'm sure she didn't want to say she was going to raise taxes on Americans across the board.

I didn't realize that imposing a 2.2% tax would cover everyone. That makes it sound like a no-brainer. Does that include things like Dental?

Dental isn’t covered in American health plans. It is a separate deal.
Covering the rest of the population probably costs less than double what it currently costs. 65+ people use a lot of medical resources.

I wonder what it would cost to include dental and vision. I think the NHS in the UK does.

My plan has both dental and vision. The dental is pretty shabby though. Cleanings only.

But I have good insurance compared to many, yet I still pay $50 co pay just to see a doctor.

Indeed.

I used the wrong term.

"Standard Deduction Amounts. The standard deduction amounts will increase to $12,000 for individuals"

That exemption should apply to the 2.2% medicare flat tax.

I think that would work.  Though if they also applied the tax to capital gains, they could probably lower that amount well below 2.2% because of the additional revenue.

Bernie’s "Medicare for All" predicted to cost nearly $33 trillion

$4 Trillion in savings is nothing to scoff at. Thank god we have level headed, rational, fiscally responsible conservatives to make these sort of bold moves, and pass the savings on to average Joe.

That was a great thread discussion you linked to, Falcon.

A new study just came out that now says Medicare For All would save $5.1 trillion over 10 years.
