Taking the bitterness out of mushrooms

If you heat a mushroom with enough heat, not only will it get cracker dry but all the bitterness will be destroyed
but the potency will not.  Most electric dehydrators are set for 150F or therabouts.  That's enough to dry them, but they still taste horrible, give some people upset stomach, vomiting, etc. 

toast them to the point where they are golden brown, with no white on the stem.

You don't want to use so much heat they turn black, it goes without saying.

I've done it a couple of times with propane stoves... 
The time to dry is significantly reduced as well, you can get small mushrooms cracker dry in 30-60 min.

edit: if I had to guess, I'd say the effectve temp is probably 400F?? give or take.

I always thought the bitterness was the drugs. Cubes don’t taste as bitter as pans, but chewing up a mouthful of dry pans that have a lot more actives by weight than cubes, the taste is reminiscent of the bitterness I associate with all sorts of drugs :shrug:

A good 12-18 hours in my dehydrator turns most of my mushrooms a nice golden color that powder up real nice in a mortar and pestle. Great for microdoses.

Though, I can't really comment on taste as I usually make a tea or take capsules. Sometimes I'll take it in a spoon and chase with water, though I don't notice any bitterness, just a nasty mushroom flavor that for some reason, triggers my gag reflex and makes it tough to swallow.

Re: OP. I don't know about the bitterness factor, but you probably want to stay below 350 degrees F -it is at this point that the active principles begin to liquefy and I assume that can't be good.

Im pretty sure the psilocybin gives shrooms the bitter taste.

Best thing to do is encapsule it or mix with a tasty, strong tasting food :shrug:

That's pretty much my attitude towards the whole deal Logical. That is assuming the taste is actually that repulsive; I just always say 'MAN UP', when people can't deal with the taste. But that's just me so...

That's disgusting and you really shouldn't be eating that much uncooked chitin, your stomach can't appreciate it.  I don't get any nausea at all since I stopped consuming uncooked mushrooms.  I mean a handful here and there is fine but... shit.  Bet that produces some weird fucking turds if you eat it like popcorn.

All I know is that fresh shroomies kick ass, and then give me extreme gastric consequences 1/2 way through the trip. If other psychonauts have a thoroughly pleasant, intense, and otherworldly experience, then I wish I had your gastric capabilities! 'Cause I can only tolerate shrooms that have been dried. Why? ya got me...

Mushrooms are different than most things.  Vegetables raw are normal to eat, and even some meats.  But ideally, you cook all mushrooms before eating them.  With cubes a good drying probably does this partially, but you can't really be sure until you make a tea or something like that.  Or maybe you're broke and you wanna make some cosmic ramen.  Been there.  Was pretty decent.  Cubes cook up better than you'd think if you sautee them fresh.

Sorry if this is a shitty source but I just googled it real quick based on what I'd read before.  http://www.anh-usa.org/supermarket-mushrooms-dangerous-to-eat-raw/ I  realize that sounds alarmist by the link but it seems clear that it's at least somewhat contested so I wouldn't wanna risk anything.

I also remember watching a stamets talk and him going all weird and quiet when asked about portabellos, seemed like he has a gag order from somewhere not to talk about them, probably something fucked up with those, you definitely wanna cook the shit out of them at any rate.

Didn't see this earlier, but I believe strongly in the other direction.  Mushroom tea is potent as fuck.  Not really bitter.  Just kinda musty.

Dried mushrooms don't cause as much nausea, probably because they're easier to chew up. If you don't chew them up well you can find chunks and the stems can look kind of like worms :lol:

I usually follow the no chew tek...Coffee grinder + dried mushroom = powder + stevia and some lemon..Makes it more or less pleasant to drink:thumbup:

Yeah, you don't have to cook cultivated mushrooms. I'd cook or dry all wild ones to drive out bugs and kill whatever shit might be in the dirt or whatever they were growing in.
