mushroom Researcher Computer Program
    #585330 - 03/21/02 03:59 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

OK I'm writing a database program to track and research mushroom growth called "Researcher". the final version will be free and available to the public. and I want YOUR input. (whoever you are) which do you think would be better. a stand alone mushroom researcher program that runs on YOUR computer where other people can't look at your data but you can send copies of your data to people you know. who could then open the program with there copy of Researcher... OR a webpage based Researcher program where everyone can share there data in one HUGE reference,(would require login ID's just like this message board). but it could run the risk of the "good guys" getting ahold of that information and later trying to use it against you?

either version will have the abilities to compare yields in graphical forms via cake tek terrarium tek. along with collinization times, recipes, etc. and will be preloaded with most popular teks off of the shroomery and other such sites.

oh and it'll be for PC only, but I'll give the source to all you linux and (gasp) mac people.

what about both?
Because I think that not everyone wants to share there info over the net,but allot will be happy to do just that.

So i think both of the possibility's would be great.

Keep on going your doing a great job!

That sounds like the best idea, but probably the most labor-intensive.

What about a small client (local) that compiles your own data and, if the user wants, can access the public db through the net. Then you may not even need to create web pages. You could simply write your own protocol that would let the clients talk with your server. No fussy graphics to download -- it's all on the client.

You can minimize tracking of personal data by not logging IP addresses, street addresses, emails, etc. You could go solely by login_id or by login_name. That would be about as anonymous as you could get that way.

Sounds neat.

I think stand alone would be great, with the ability to export your data... And maybe password protect it too. Graphs would be a plus, and maybe even a journal for your procedure and stuff. Just some ideas

Are you planning on having categories for substrate / casing types?
or
How will you log the recipes for substrates / casings?

Might also be good to include container (jar, bag, bucket) info, and TEK types (cakes or cased) for those who wish to compare.

And ya gotta log the strain type!

Good luck!

Excellent idea! I look forward to using it. My thoughts:

a. lots of places for dates (innoc, full col, birth, casing, pin initiation, harvest date for each flush, etc.)
b. make it picture friendly - allow the recording of visual data as well as textual.

good luck! i'm root'n for you!

This sounds like a very exciting program. As far as your question: I look at this totaly from a legal perspective. For the same reason that warez sites are almost impossible to fine now, yet a file sharing browser (ex: Lime Wire, Bear Share etc) can fine a ton of copyrighted files... I say go with a peer to peer system. I would totaly advoid any public website use due to the ease of useing the information against someone. For example: Private email has some laws (USA) protecting it's use. Web Sites are considered public places (at least legaly speaking) and are much easier to bust. Lets keep in mind that what your sugesting is a total record of what could be ileagle. Pics on a public site like this is pusing it far enough I feel.

(just a layman's opinion)

the one thing is if I do let it upload to a website. I can't afford to pay to host it.

I admire your dedication and ambition. I would suggest doing both. Growing mushrooms isn?t illegal, and growing mushrooms that contain Psilocin/Psilocybin isn?t illegal everywhere. So if you do both, it will suit everyone?s research.

I hope everyone?s positive input will help you make a final decision.

sweet program idea. thanks for the link. I'm almost decided on how I'm gonna start the project. I need to pick up some reference material before I start. hopefully I'll have something to show off soon.

Gasp! Oh no, I guess I can't run it then because I have a mac.

Ironic that. Apple is the one company that has roots in mushrooms and psychedelics.

Better be careful. Windoze XP now scans your programs for illegal content and emails the source to the DEA. Its a new "feature".

hmmmmm, I actually have this VB 4.0 book that I bought about two years ago and it's just collecting dust in my closet........... however its pretty big, it might be expensive to ship. I could look in it if you have a specific question. Otherwise, they're usually on sale for like 20 bucks at barnes & noble.

1st off. windows isn't "smart" enough to know what is legal and what is not. besides microsoft has bigger things to work on that will make them money. do you even realize how much data would be trafficed if windows did monitor and send that stuff out?

Macs are cute little girly computers. actaully you may be able to run this data base prog on your mac. I may do it in PHP (open source *whoot*) and have it be a webpage style setup. and exactly what do you define as "roots" it's not like an apple 2E came with a free glass bong.

BTW: yes Jobs and Waz were hippie computer nerd stoners back in the day but so was Gates, well stoner not a hippie. They are traitors now. Jobs and gates are evil corprate sons of a bitches.

Lana--- I have been really busy with finals, girlfriend, and "cooking" some rice cakes. haven't had time to sit down and work on it. hopefully soon though. the actuall database structure is done I just need to write the interface
