Vermiculite a Carcinogen?
    #561681 - 02/24/02 03:54 PM (22 years, 2 days ago)

i have been told by employees at Home Depot that they are no longer carrying vermiculite because it is a carcinogenic substance. Has anyone else heard this? What are the ramifications?

I think i recall seeing somewhere here in the shroomery that a batch of vermiculite was contaminated with asbestos. Stores took it off shelves, but not all Verm. is so. That might be what was goin on. Not too sure. Fuck it, only gonna live once.

verm dust is a carcinogen. whoopy doo.
cigarette smoke is too.
just about everything packaged on this earth nowadays is labeled as 'hazardous' in some way. try not to shake up the bag and snuff it up more than 1 or 2 times a day and you should be fine.

Holy shit people; COMMON SENSE! we were all born with it where did it go?
maybe theres a tek out there to explain how to use it!

hummmmmm

Thats funny.....the Downtown Seattle Home Depot carries Verm.
4 square foot bags...$16.00
Thats enough Verm to last almost 6 months.

I think the people you talked to....were saying they didn't carry Verm cause of the Asbestos scare.... Awhile back a Verm mine found some asbestos.....and alot of places pulled Verm off their shelfs for awhile.

i saw on HGTV a while back (visiting my stepmother) that most verm has asbsetos. they were sugesting using a mask when using it in potting soil or whatever they were doing with it. they said something about that being the reason it is now harder to find in gardening centers and such.

Yes, it is bullshit. But you're are right about one thing: A mask should be worn when using any material that can produce large amounts of dust when poured. Vermiculite can contain tiny amounts of perlite dust which is a known allergen.
