The Path to Truth

Being driven to a set of assumptions because one is afraid of another set and their consequences is the most passionate and nonobjective kind of philosophy. Too many intellectuals and scientists (almost unconsciously) use basic assumptions as defences against their fears of other assumptions and their consequences. Until we can train ourselves to be dispassionate and accept both the assumptions and the results of making them without arrogance, without pride, without misplaced enthusiasm, without fear, without panic, whithout anger, hence without emotional involvement in the results or in the theories, we cannot advance this inner science of Man very far.

Those who wish to embrace the truth of an alternative set of assumptions as an escape from the basic assumptions of modern science are equally at fault. Those who must find a communication with other beings in this kind of experiment will apparently find it. One must be aware that there are (as in the child) needs within one's self for finding certain kinds of phenomena and espousing them as the ultimate truth. Such childlike needs needs dictate their own metaprograms.

My grandfather said, it may look good on paper, but until you see if it works or not, it doesnt mean shit :wink: . well.. something to that effect.

Im still not clear on what this quote means or what the author had intended for it.

It's a good quote you pasted there, as good as any other anyway, I'm just pointing out that there are about a million people who have written down their little "if only people would do this the world would be saved" or "THIS is exactly what is wrong with the world" pieces and they are correct, but so what? People who understand all the fundamental problems of the human race are a dime a dozen.

Maybe we should all sit in front of the television and zone out.. no since thinking about existance if people have already done so.

And I'd happen to disagree anyways. I haven't met that many people who have had a pretty unclouded perspective on the world and what occurs within it... most of them that do seem to fit what I consider understanding (damn, it sure is hard to talk about anything without assuming an individual perspective), in fact, are from this forum. *gasp*

I'm not making any comment on what you should do with your life or whether or not it's worth your time to read these types of essays or books. I've done my fair share of reading them. The reason I don't personally find them exciting anymore is that there are a million perspectives on the base problems of humanity and they all make perfect sense. My point in *yawn*ing is that almost anybody can take a pen to paper and construct a logical well-thought out and almost complete dissertation on the source of the world's troubles. But, when it comes to, for example, living "without bias and devoid of assumptions" you find that nobody, the author included, actually can do so.

My sarcastic attitude comes from my belief that people can write about how it's better to have an unclouded perspective a lot easier than they can actually have an unclouded. So when someone comes out and says "PEOPLE OF THE WORLD! WE MUST UNCLOUD OUR PERSPECTIVE AND SEE THINGS CLEARLY!!" my response is "duh"

And I guess I was basically saying that too, about truly having an unclouded perspective and living out the ideas that one spits out...

Hehe, everyone can be Emerson, but not very many people play the part of Thoreau.. :grin:

Also the thing about how finding the path is easy enough, but actually walking it is a different story... even I've found this so true. :grin:

I like it when people still spit out the ideas, though, because you never know who is going to come acrossed them and actually use them. I definitely wouldn't be who I was today if I had never found this place... I've learned from others and myself. :laugh:

It's not something you should do. It's just a way to find the facts easier. Simple as that.

The author isn't imposing it on anyone, he isn't really an author anyways, but a scientist who wrote this in his conclusions. I don't read books and all that for the same reasons you mentioned- but I found this little find and I think I couldn't have said it better (but I did later in my previous post).

P.S.: This M.D. actually refers to authors as having assumptions and bias.

makes sense. science has to kick themselves every now and then to be reminded that despite their stated aims of being objective they are creatures with an inescapable subjective experience.
