you want farm animal feed from a ranch/farm supply store. I pay $14/50 pounds of oats. They are "triple cleaned whole oats" with a silhouette of a horsie on it. yes oat groats is another term for them.

Awesome! Thanks, just found some for 15.99 + tax for 50LB. Can't complain about that!

I believe groats have had the hull removed, which is no good you will end up with a starchy mess.
When you find oats make sure the hull is intact.  I am still working with a 50# bag of producers pride whole oats I picked up at tractor supply for around 16 bucks months ago.

Have you used the 2 liter top cutoff for a FC with these bottles? If so do you just keep lid loose on the soda bottle as Pasty does with his straw bottles or will these need more FAE where polyfil in the top would be better?

These have an empty 1.5L bottle on them, it fits over the hole absolutely perfectly.

I'm using the quart pp5's and I think the mouth is bigger on them. Those look great though! I'm thinking I should use the 2 liter as pasty shows them fitting perfectly in his straw bottle tek... and he just gave the comfirmation...

Yup. Works fine.

might work a little better if the lids were removed and either just left open or lightly stuffed with polyfill. stems look a bit long and caps are small, so they might benefit from more FAE.

When I use pop bottles for fruiting I poke a bunch of small holes in them with a steak knife.

Just at the top or over the whole thing? And do you leave the lid off the pop bottle as well?

The whole thing and I take the top off and stuff with polly. How many holes you use will really depend on your environment. You really don't need holes but I like as much FAE as possible.

Ok thanks, and as far as a casing, is just verm still the best for both mono and these pop bottles FC's?

Is it best with any of those casings to apply dry then soak down with a spray bottle? Or is that just for verm?

I mean.. prepped CVG shouldn't be dry anyway but.. if it did happen to dry out and you applied it as a casing and misted it it would be fine, I do it sometimes.  Jiffy... I dunno, jiffy needs to be pasteurized to be used as a casing material, does it not?

yes jiffy needs pasteurized, thus requiring it to be hydrated. dry ingredients do not pasteurize very well.

That's what I was thinking..  I have a big bag of jiffy but haven't gotten around to using it.. will probably case the upcoming PE with it.

Interesting.

Destruction of micro-organisms in dry products with low water activities is a lot harder than in liquid media. Several reasons are postulated by scientists. The most relevant are:

When only a small amount of water is available (low water activity), vibration of water molecules is limited. Therefore only a small amount of proteins are destroyed (denaturated) when heated.

Micro-organisms in dry products have adapted themselves to stresses such as thermal, hydric and ionic, applied during the pasteurization treatment. This means they are more resistent and harder to destroy.

I'm talking-out-my-ass when I say this but the way I think of it is that the bacteria are mostly dried out at this point and their enzyme proteins are not fully unravelled as they would be when fully hydrated.  This makes them more resistant to heat, as the enzymes are in a more stable shape when not fully hydrated.  It is the destruction of enzymes within organisms that usually kills them first afterall.  I totally just made this all up btw, don't ask for sources :dancer:
