(formerly D&D edition talk) Shroomery D&D play by post group talk

I've always played on D&D 3.5, but I've been liking the magic system less and less. I want more ritual based magic. Advanced D&D sounds like it had more ritual based magic, and its shaman class sounds good for role play.
Also open to suggestions of other role-playing systems. I've been exposed to GURPS a fair amount and have heard of thraxis.
But the main question is, can anyone here compare 3.5 to advanced D&D?

ive only played 3.5
the thing about DND though, the DM can change the rules as long as everyone is okay with it
as far as i know, my buddies that still play use 3.5 out of habit and because of how expensive the new versions of the books are (more than 30$ sometimes)
we almost never let characters die permanantly, because we thought it was stupid to lose all that effort i dont know what the differences are, but i would just stick with what you're comfortable with

I played as a kid but sadly forgot how to play, want to get back into it but learning the rules again is hard and I am not sure if I like the newer books as much. I don't even know what edition I played but it was the one with krusk, jozan, tordek, Mialee and Lidda.

DnD 5th edition is my favorite. It goes back to a lot of the old systems while introducing a lot of cool new stuff and simplifying a lot of things. If you don't like magic system in 3.5 you might like 5th edition. It improves a lot of things IMO and a lot of it hearkens back to very early editions
I've been hearing from some GMs that the newest version coming out soon is going to be the best one yet.
Even if you aren't a GM.. I would recommend checking out this series. Very interesting stuff.

2nd edition is the best. All this new fangled hoo haw and non-THACO based gobblygook just dont make no sense. Might as well be Cyberpunk.

I grew up with first edition "advanced dungeons and dragons" and just "Dungeons and Dragons" books. Second year in I aquired a set ofthe very first edition of the game. Came in a small box and the 3 little books were more like paperback leaflets. haha. There was no seperation of Race and Class either. You were just an "elf" or a dwarf.
Man the very first release of D&D sucked pussy anus bubbles.
It was cool to own though, especially for early nerd child me. It did not however, get me laid, like it would now a days with the current gen of freshly legal geek loving girls.

My older brother played and this is the book I remember.
I used to paint the little metal figures though when I was a kid. I remember they were soft and chewy.

Yeah they were pewter figurines. I used to buy em a lot too even tough I sucked at painting them, especially since im colorblind so most art related things blew anus bits. I had some battlesystem books though so it was fun to use them with AD&D on hexagon maps n stuff.

People are selling their painted figurines for as much as $50 on ebay. I could make some extra cash and have an excuse to sniff that killer toxic paint. Brings back memories.

I have a few friends that growing up are amazing artists. The sort that can paint those epic dragon color paintings/pictures from inside the later players handbooks and such. Anywho, growing up I sometimes could talk them into painting some of my figurines for me. They were awesomesauce professional looking.
THOSE you could easily sell for good cash online.
So if you got the talent, sell dat shit yo. Also, like you said, free snifftastic fun times.

I started out on D&D and AD&D, and then 2nd edition. I was super into it in those days, and I always thought the game would be even better if it were more complicated. But then much later I played 3.5 and I found it boring, as it took forever to do anything in the game because of all the complicated rules. I totally missed out on 4th ed. because I wasn't playing att. And then I picked up the 5th ed. books and played a short campaign and liked it a lot. I've always been more of a GM than a player. And it was cool to be able to pick up the books and run a campaign very quickly. I think I'll stick with 5th ed. for now. I tend to like to make shit up that doesn't fall within the rules so much if it makes for a cool narrative or just adds interest. I think it comes from being GM for so long that we incorporated books from D&D, AD&D, and 2e together even from the separate worlds. I always made my own worlds, so the books were just merged into some aspect of my own worlds and we just made up things that weren't a part of the game yet.
But yeah, I am going to try to stick with 5e for now, but I have a lot more reading to do to figure out how everything works.

nobody will be making fun of roleplaying games anymore when virtual D&D hits
So sounds like 2nd edition is the general consensus. Does that mean the 2nd edition of advanced D&D?
That would be really cool if AD&D was faster to play. Thats one of the main problems in my sessions, everything taking forever.
We'll be wrapping up a session, its been a fun session and everything, but when we recap what we did its hardly anything.

Ime it's almost always a really slow game in any version. The only times things went fast is if the party all agrees to forgo most of the nitty gritty rules and just trust the DM to make shit up fairly. It's all about the people you are playing with. Some prefer tons of narrative and rolling dice for every little thing. Others just want to teleport to the middle of a dungeon crawl battle and just hack, slash, and loot. I hear there are better games than D&D for that sort of style, but Idk about them.

It's refreshing to see so many shroomerites gaming! I used to play ADnD all the way through 3.5 and a little 4.0. I thought even 3.5 was oversimplified and 4 was just unimaginative crap! But to answer OP's question it really depends on what you're going for. I feel like earlier versions are harder to learn, but much easier to rely on roleplaying.
The later versions are so simple its like, "What do you do?", " I do feat.". I think that really just turns it into a power grind if you let it.

4e
I played a lot of 3.5 when I was a youngun in Utah but I alway found myself liking the classes in 4e more and 5th is just too watered down.
