I can't dial in my tubs for the life of me.  It seems they always want to dry out!  It is winter and the air humidity is around 20% even with many tubs in a small closet together.

Stuff all the holes as tight as you can and wait for it to fog up.

Start with the top holes, loosen a little bit every 12 hours. That means when you go to bed and when you wake up. Then loosen the sides.

Once it is foggy in there and I begin to loosen the top, what should I be looking for to know when it is dialed? The streaks down the side right or what else? Thanks -Kushroom

You could just buy a hole saw and cut the holes with the drill set on reverse and the tubs won't crack either.

Just put a few tubs in here now. Gonna try and run the fan right by the 4 of them? Is that kinda how you guys do it? I did it a lil different for one tub but think this may be better. More tubs to come.

In case polyfill is not available (never seen here in Jewrope), can I just sub it with cotton padding?

no cotton is organic, it would be the choice material if it worked, then we wouldn't have to go out of our way to get polyfil.
but polyfil exists in 3rd world africa so I'm sure you can find some in jewrope.

poly is a rather new material and before poly cotton was common to use for filters

Wow, what an incredible resource this thread is! Awesomesauce, all of it. Hopefully this isn't a redundant or retarded question, but have any of you found a benefit (eg. easier to maintain humidity levels, less contam risk) to having an inch or two of perlite, either dampened with h2o or a h2o/h2o2 mix, at the bottom of the tub, and the cased substrate in a plastic tray sitting on top of said perlite?

Has this been tried, possibly in lieu of one of the poly-stuffed holes?

I'm back to n00b status, and really appreciate any/all help or direction to a more relevant thread!!

I doubt anyone has tried doing exactly that. perlite does nothing for humidity if it can't evaporate. sitting on the bottom of a tub with no air flow through it sounds like a contamination magnet to me actually. h2o2 isn't good for shit it reacts and degrades in minutes. it's also harmful to mycelium so there's that.

there's not really a contam risk if your spawn is clean your substrate preparation is spot on. during fruiting it's an inherently not sterile process it needs to be exposed to the atmosphere but fully colonized substrates are very contamination resistant considering they're already 100% contaminated with your mushroom mold.

A properly prepared substrate at field capacity in a monotub will provide plenty of moisture for high RH. Heat from the colonizing substrate accelerates evaporation and thus provides plenty of humidity. I rarely see people with too dry of a mono, and it's usually easily resolved by turning off fans and/or stuffing the bottom polyfil tighter. Most people seem to have more trouble with providing adequate FAE.

Putting perlite on the bottom of a mono won't evaporate as well as it does in a SGFC. Perlite evaporates better if it has air flowing through it. This is why a SGFC is designed the way it is. If you want to use trays and perlite, make a SGFC and put your tray in that.

You may find a typical monotub is less maintenance than a typical SGFC because a mono generally doesn't require any misting at least through the first flush. Where as the abundance of constant FAE in a SGFC generally means you need to mist regularly.

Feel free to experiment though.

Re: How to dial in your monotubs like a boss [Re: FrankHorrigan]

Hi Frank!
I have hung out here on the forum for a while and I have tried to educate myself (your posts hav bin a great help). I have come so far, that I now feel comfident in trying a grow in a monotub, and so I have disidet.
I have a suitable tub that I'm going to rebuild following your instructions.
The tub“s data:
V = 12 gallon
L = 22"
W = 15.25"
H = 11"
it will need 4.1 gallon of substrate to reach 4" substrate depth, or 3.0 gallon for 3"

I think I have the construktion of the long sides of the tub right:
Black line is in the hight of 4", and holes are 1.5" in diameter

For the short sides you recomand only one hole, centered and placed at the very top of the side. As far as I have understud, the size of that hole can be either 1.5" or 2" and stil work great. So I have decided that my hole should be 1.8".
Now comes the problem, The tub is kind of funny constructed and the short sides is not straight, making it impossible to place a 1.8" hole centered at the very top, se pic:

With the lit on:

As I se it, I have to chose between  2 different compromise:

A)
Make a centered 1.8" hole that is in a too low position.
pros:
1. Hole still have the right shape.
2. I still have  a good indicator of good FAE, as a line of evaporation running down one or both
    sides of the tub from the top holes is stil possible.

cons:
The position of the hole might be too low?? in a tub that is not the highest to start with?

B)
Make an ovale hole at the top with an area similar to a round 1.8" hole.
pros:
Hole is at the very top of the short side as it is ment to be.

cons:
1. The hole is ovale, not circular( might be bad, might be ok??)
2. I (might not) have of good indicator of good FAE, as a line of evaporation (because of the
  smal horisontal plato) might not be able to run down one or both
  sides of the tub from the top holes.

Please help me, shall I go with solution A or B?

Re: How to dial in your monotubs like a boss [Re: Peaceful Soul]
    #21594526 -

Because it's a smaller tub, I'd just go ahead with one 1.2" hole at the very top. Smaller tubs tend to dry faster anyway and the difference between 1.2 and 1.8 isn't very significant.

You can even use 1.2" holes for the bottom for the same reasons as stated above. If you find you aren't getting enough FAE, you can loosen the poly and/or take out the poly on top and/or turn a fan on in the room.

The bottom hole placement looks fine. It's okay if it's a little high. Being a little higher may help prevent drying under the holes if you loosen the poly there.

I like to put my bottom holes so the space between them is the same as the space to the edges.

And I don't know if you read it earlier, peaceful soul, but run your drill in reverse to cut the holes. It works super clean and you don't risk cracking the tub. It looks like you were very fastidious with your measurement and layout so you definitely want your cuts to be clean :super:
