Cotton balls and pressure cookers
    #1421969 - 04/01/03 06:59 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

The hooligans down the street were going to start some popcorn jars and wanted to do the thing with the lid for air exchange. They were wondering if they could use cotton balls instead of the polly fill cotton. I didn't think it would be a big difference. What ya'll think?

Also you only put about an INCH of water in the pressure cooker right? Not a whole LOT of water??

Cotton should work fine.  You NEVER want to run out of water in your PC.  At exactly an hour, it should JUST be running dry.  Depending on the temp you leave the stove on, usually at least an inch and a half (depending on how many jars are in there too...)  Trial and errror, but if the steam stops being hardcore scary as fuck, then take it off the heat and let it cool (don't open it to add more water, that's just retarded...).

Have fun, and don't fill your jars too full.  Remember, grains are used kuz you SHAKE them!

EDIT: I don't think too much water would hurt anything as long as a) the jars aren't floating and fall over,  and b) the water doesn't splash into the jars and soak the medium (although covering with tinfoil usually keeps any water out...  p.s.: leave the tinfoil on unless you get no air exchange, then take them off.  Different substrates will work with more and less air exchange.)

I have the feeling that I've done this all before.

i'd vote no.
cotton balls will get saturated, and let no water through. polyfill is more hydrophobic. keep looking.

<shrug>
If you're using tinfoil you should be alright, but for the cost of pollyfill, go to wal-mart and get some...

a foaf ran out of polyfill and used cotton balls on 3 of his WBS jars. they are doing fine. actually, they are doing better than the others, htough that is probbaly just circumstantial.
