Yup. It's just penicillium though nothing particularly aggressive, just spreads quickly.

Never seen this before, though I have seen rust mold growing in the wild(on living grasses).
Very cool.

And there is so much more I feel it needs, and it's behind on a good edit/update.
I typically have much more free time but I've been homeless for like 4 months and just trying to survive, run a website, and so on.

Keep adding stuff though, I'll get around to a big update soon as I get free time.

How can you tell the difference between cobweb and regular mycelium growth? Can a cobweb jar be saved or does it need to be thrown? Thanks

A few of my jars - im varying stages of distress
Hard red winter wheat berries
3 rinses, 16hr soak, 15min boil (10-15% bursting), and 2.25hrs PC at 11psi
It took about a week for any growth, i shook at 8 days, and again at 12 days. Only one jar had the yellow in it before the second shake - and i think i did damage to the mycellium with the shake. Before that, the mycellium seemed a bit whispy, and the shake caused it to cling to the grains, almost looking dehydrated.

its now 14days, and it looks like 2 of the jars might be starting to continue colonsing, but i think 3 of them are junk.

is it bacteria or 'myc piss'?, before the shake most of the grains were dry, and the upper layer of berries was looking dehydrated.

i tried a few filters (tyvec, nailholes+micropore tape, and polyfill) - surprisingly the 3/16" holes covered in micropore is the best jar.

sniffing at the jars (at least the tyvec ones), theres a weird smell that is something between musty and 'lysol-y', which i assume is a bad thing and not simply a result of spritzing the cabinet with lysol.

i also tried a liquid culture, which had a thin skim of something on the surfece - didnt seem white/rhizo enough for mycellium, but also didnt resemble mold. what would bacteria look like on there?

any idea where i went wrong - was there a problem in my process, or would shaking and poking at the jars too frequently cause the problem (The shakes were done around 10% and 45%? I'm going to start soaking a new batch of wheat berries tomorrow so hope to work out the kinks in my process.

i'd make sure your grains are dry after the pc cycle and that your innoculant was clean

moisture content seemed good - after PC less than 15% of grains had exploded, and the grains almost looked dry. Innoculant was brand new from the store.

i can think of a few small but potential causes;
1) tinfoil was left on jars for about 6hrs after the PC
2) I shook and poked at the jars too much
3) i flamed the needle once, then pinched it in an alcohol swab between jars to prevent airborne contams landing on the needle.
4) I dont have an SAB - but i showered, wore gloves/sleeves, and bleached/lysoled the area multiple times in advance of doing the work

I just rinsed a batch of hard red SPRING wheat berries and am leaving them to soak for ~18hrs before i drain, rinse, simmer, rinse, PC them, and leave them in a cabinet for 8-10hrs until inoculation
