human psychology is only predictable in a statistical sense.

dont mistake the whole for the individual

i must be leaving for a little while... do you see though how at least one of the three statements must be false?

which one is it? i'm really not sure...

This is one of those questions which logic cannot answer.

if all energy and matter follows non-chaotic, orderly, predictable, cause-and-effect patterns, ruled by the laws of physics, and at the same time, the thoughts and actions of human beings are not totally and completely determined by preceding conditions, then something is awry here.

why are the electro-chemical events in our skulls not just as predestined as the movement of the stars?

i can only think that one of two conclusions must be drawn:

1. free will is an illusion and our actions and thoughts are just the results of chemical and electrical events as predetermined and predictable as everything else in the universe.

2. there is some other force, which exists outside of matter\energy, that is working here, and this force has the ability to exert itself over the material world we're familiar with.

very strange either way... unless something is missing... conclusion #1 sounds more plausible to me, as strange as it sounds.

whatever it actually is... a brain is a very strange thing.

stated another way:

if free will exists as more than an illusion, there is more to conciousness than the material events inside of our skulls.

and conversely:

if consciousness arises solely from the material events inside our skulls, then free will is only an illusion.
