Are we supposed to eat psychoactive mushrooms?
    #1606428 -

My life has been very different since the first time I ate magic mushrooms. I feel it is different in a good way, but the change was recent and I can't really be sure yet.

But today I was watching a show on the human senses, and one of the things it said about taste got me thinking. It said that one of the tastes humans perceive with their tongues is bitter, and it said we have this ability because things which taste bitter are almost always toxic or bad. In other words, things which taste bitter are to be avoided.

This made me think about mushrooms, and other natural hallucinogens such as morning glory or hawaiian baby woodrose seeds, and the fact that they taste bitter. Does this mean we should avoid them? Perhaps their hallucinogenic effects really cause some sort of long-term damage, and we evolved to perceive their taste as bitter to warn us against consuming them.

are you sayin 'aspirin tastes bitter, so that means it is bad, too.'

or

'aspirin is bitter, and aspirin is good, so not all bitter things are bad.'

?

cuz what if every asprin a person takes actually reduces 7.68 hours from their life, but we haven't figured this out yet?

you never know!

I don't think that because shrooms are bitter we shouldn't eat them, I think that maybe its other toxic things could have made us evolve into not liking bitter things. I don't think that shrooms are the reason we evolved to avoid bitter things.

I'm saying that things that taste bitter aren't necessarily bad for you. aspirin can help people at risk for heart disease, that's a lot of people.. so I don't think it takes 7.68 hours from your life.

but yeah psilocybin was probably developed as a poison so the mushroom wouldn't get eaten by animals..

The unpleasant taste says these things are NOT FOOD. Vomiting, nausea, and fear usually are strong indicators of toxins being rejected by the body. Long-term dangers of excessive and /or regular usage have never been adequately studied.

Should they be avoided? From a survival standpoint, it is incredibly hard to defend yourself when out of touch with consensus reality.

The bottom line is what do you mean by "should"?

In my experience, shrooms don't really have much of a taste at all. Anyway, even if they are harmful to your body, they are good for your mind and spirit.

This is true.

I can almost make myself like the taste of dried mushrooms. Fresh shrooms aren't very tasty compared to dry really- very bitter.

Some people can't stand Mimosa Hostilis liquid. It's very bitter. My reasoning: It's this way so you only have the experience once every blue moon or so.

Your "reasoning" totally escapes me. The bitter quality is due to a high concentrate of plant tannins which are found in thousands of plant species (even ordinary tea). Now the Mimosa Hostilis plant was not known to be used as an Ayahuasca admixture until the last decade or two. So for millions of years it developed a bitterness in wait for someone to discover it then make them vomit because it was concerned with overusage? Not buying today.

Exactly.
Steve, the answer is "it depends on your goal". If your
goal is to alter your reality/glimpse a seperate reality,
then shrooms will help. When u say "are we supposed to"
I'm assuming u mean from an evolutionary standpoint - i.e.
in terms of survival. But the effects of an action on survival
are difficult to predict until a species is extinct. As an example,
perhaps we arn't "supposed to" think either... after all thinking
lead to the invention of nuclear wepons which can destroy
the entire planet let alone our species...

As for asprin taking 7.68 hours from our lives... well how do
we know that we won't live eternal lives in bliss due to some
strange chaotic effect of asprin ? the answer is that we don't know...
we just don't know...we can only make our best judgements based
on our limited reasoning abilities, memory and experience. Applying
these principles to Psilocybin, it appears that most people can take
it without suffering permanent damage, and it can offer people
an interesting perspective on life. One can also flip... but I wouldn't
know anything about that

Okay... let's clear this all up.

The bitterness in psilocybin mushrooms is most likely caused by the drug itself. All molecules containing the indole ring structure taste bitter (that aren't some super-crazy synthetic drug-> disclaimer just in case there is a non-bitter molecule). I know for a fact that pure 5-MeO-DIPT and 5-MeO-DMT taste bitter as hell (WAAAY worse that mushrooms).

Of course, there COULD be some other chemical in the mushroom that is responsible for the bitter taste... and I just might not be aware of it.

i dont think that just because shrooms taste bitter that it means they should be avoided. i like to agree with they taste like shit so we dont eat too many, if they tasted like chocolate most of us would sow down a whole ounce before we're done nibbling.

if you think about it, there are a lot of bad tasting things that are good for us.

peas, carrots, and other veges taste like shit to most of us, and are good for us. The shit like chocolate, caffine, etc taste good but arent so good for our bodies.

alkaloids are generally bitter; some other non-alkaloidal stuff is also quite bitter (like, ummmm absinthin, found in wormwood herb)...
"bitter" often = "medicine"...
(chimpanzees & other primates have some bitter herbs that they only consume when they are sickly... hmmmm, monkey meds...)

I find p. semilanceata doesn't taste that bitter in any state, when its wet they taste like puddle water (not that I know.... ) and when they're dry they taste quite bland. I agree, that shrooms evolved to contain psilocybin as a deterent to animals eating them but I dunno if we evolved to taste bitterness to stop us eating poisonous things it does  seems quite  reasonable tho. As for the are we "supposed" to eat psychoactive mushrooms its a silly question really, sadly god (if ur  a believer) didn't provide us with a cook book telling us what we should and shouldn't eat......

The hallucinogenic properties of mushrooms are a defense for the mushroom. I read a study a while ago that said that humans are the only animals that will repeatedly eat hallucinogenic plants. Most animals avoid them after the first experience or never touch them at all because of instinct.

Their taste has nothing to do with what we will or will not eat. If they tasted like chocolate the majority of people still wouldn't chow down on an ounce everyday myself included. Also taste is not a good indicator of bad stuff. Take spinach for instance, god awful bitter stuff but if we are to believe childhood cartoons it is really good for us.

If they tasted like chocolate ...

Chocolate (cocoa bean pod) is extremely bitter. It is only the addition of fat and tons of sugar that makes it palatable.
