Mushrooms in videogames
    #1670230 - 06/28/03 10:31 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

SERIOUSLY though - WHY ARE so many mushrooms seen in videogames - is there some sort of subliminal message embedded in all these results of technology that we drone over day in and day out? You've all seen it in one way or another...

Your thoughts?

"the philosophy of mushrooms appearing in videgames"

im dont think that this has anything to do with a "philosophy", what you are speaking of is more along the lines of consumer investigation.

and i dont know, but maybe...just maybe, mushrooms are put in all these videogames because mushrooms exist in our world, and videogames try to render our world in a virtual atmosphere?

like...did you ever notice why there are so many roads in videogames, or....animals!! or...even trippier....BIRDS.

or maybe all the videogame designers of the world are conspiring to "wake up" the masses.

They're are often alot more mushrooms in videogames then in the real world though. But, I don't think they are meant to represent the psychodelic variety, its just that cutesy cartoon mushrooms look cool. Thats about it.

All mushrooms look like they were designed by cartoonists... :eyemouth:

They lack that realistic look-and-feel that most plants and animals have in the real world.

Maybe it's because mushrooms are just easy to draw.

I don't know...

it's because mushrooms have symbolic archetypcal significance. the white stemmed red capped amanita make many many cameos in folklore.

so what is the archetypical significance?
I do know what you mean though, there's something really odd about mushrooms, I just don't know what it is.
they're kind of magical in a way like how they seem to sprout out of nowhere overnight and how they can grow in the dark. there's an alien quality to them. they're like "giant" micro-organisms or something. really strange little guys.

I used to work in the industry and many programmers and producers and stuff are into various drugs.. If I were producing games I'd have shrooms wherever I could get away with sticking them

So all those adventures Mario had was just a long drawn-out trip?

Eat a mushroom, power up.  Eat a mushroom, gain a life.  Granted, eating a flower gave you the ability to shoot fire and eating leaves made you fly; I don't know, it may just be reading too much into this.

On second thought, these are all plant life.  Maybe the flower and leaf are other entheogens?

Uhm...nice theories.

But i think it has to to with the fact that almost 100% of video games originate from japan.

...and the fact that mushrooms are legal, and readily available in headshops in said country.

(altho i think just recently they've fixed this legal loophole. I'm not sure of its legal status right now.)

the flowers are morning glory or lotus and the leaves are herb, they just didn't show him tokin' the fire flower. and i think the leaves were actually bunny ears, white rabbit maybe??

It's not just video games either...  Alice In Wonderland is a great example.  A story about a bad trip prettied up for the kiddies.   There are numerous "children's" books that have been written by heavy drug users about their heavy drug usage.  It's just that eating a bunch of acid and then telling an adult with no knowledge of said drug about what you saw would make you seem like an idiot.  Ever been around tripping people when you weren't?  They're quite an odd bunch.  It's just that their stories were so far out there that adults labelled them as children's material and then exposed us all to drug induced hallucinations at an early age.  It's quite beautiful actually.  Brings a tear of happiness to my eye...
