After reading this tek I immediately started a parts list and commenced a new build..

By basic measurements, do you mean this?:

It was listed in the original post...

CFM = Cubic feet per minute - air-flow

Matching a blower to filter is because you need a precise CFM blower to correspond with your filter choice to achieve the correct laminar flow rate. Filters come in less variable sizes then blowers, so its smarter to choose a filter, then match a blower later. There's a blower for just about every increment of CFM out there...

To dumb things down and get straight to the point, you'll prolly want to subtract the UV-light chamber I added and perhaps go with a labritory grade H.E.P.A. (Not that my cheap filter doesn't get the same job done)

This is the best hood TEK I've seen. Excellent craftmanship!!

I'm building my own designed with the blower on the side so I can put it in the closet easier. The work table will cover the hepa when not in use.

I'm planning on a very similar TEK once I build and test the thing, keeping to your very high quality of craftmanship of course.

I've worked hard at understanding the whole HVAC thing so I can do the filter to blower matching correctly.

I'm concerned that you after you come up with 1.2" pressure that you use a Dayton 1TDR3 which has the following pressure vs CFM table:

Press  CFM
**************
0      273
0.1    245
0.2    230
0.3    210
0.4    183
0.5    135

You need 200 CFM which the blower can do at 0" static pressure. But as you see in the above table at 0.5" you're already down to half of what you need and you're trying to go above 1"?!

Obviously it's working for you so I can only guess your hepa is a lot less than 1". It's hard finding the exact stats on the cheaper hepa filters.

Your pre-filter, which I'm going to be using as well, is rated at 0.2" @ 475CFM meaning that it will only be 0.08" pressure at 200CFM. So at least the prefilter shouldn't be hurting your flow so much.

It will be some time before I can use this but damn nice tutorial and love the pics... I guess we both learn in the same manner.

I saw this probably a year and a half ago, and don't know why I never bookmarked it, or posted a reply. It actually is the tread that gave me the idea to buy my UV lamp. Very awesome job!! I still have not taken the time to rebuild my flow hood, but seeing this thread again, I think I will start this week.

The flow is not noticeable from distance, when you put your hand inside the work chamber you can feel a slight movement. Laminar flow is very subtle and nearly undisturbing, it doesn't take much wind to shoo away a contam .3 microns. If you can feel it, its prolly like a hurricane to the contams. I haven't did the math, but a quick estimate, I think the blower is of ok size for the 12x12 hepa from FP. Might need to downgrade the micron filtration level of the prefilter tho.

Yeah I was really surprised when I built my hood, did the flame test, etc. and started working in front of it for the first time. I had to keep checking because with the noise of the blower and all I found it difficult to accept that the laminar flow was that subtle, I kept thinking there should be more FLOW, lol.

That's beautiful work amigo and a lot of effort doing the write up and pics, 5 shrooms for you.  :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2:
