flow hoods matching blower with filter is this right?
    #1421135 -

OK, A FOAF is working to build himself a flow hood. using a 1/5 hp CFM @ RPM 0.500 Inch Static Pressure:1045 blower from grainger http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/searchresults.jsp

and a 24x24x5.8" fungi perfecti filter.
http://www.fungiperfecti.com/tools/airfilters.html

Is this the right combination? The blower seems kinda beefy and since none of us won the lottery this week.....

The plans he's going by can be found over at Nans nook archives
http://www.nansnook.com/index2.htm

This is the best looking diy flow hood hes found but it is kinda pricey and want to make sure its right before sinkng $$ into it.

Thanks!

The blower link doesn?t work.

You can get much cheaper filters at http://www.filtersrx.com/sizes.asp?CAT=HEPHP9

Hey Thanks that site is like half the price! Are the filters comparable? Foaf figures its a one time expense and doesn't object (overmuch) to paying more if it'll work better.

Sorry bout the grainger link. It doesn't seem to want to let me link to it for some reason. Its Grainger Part # 7f735 and they have a real nice search engine set up.

Already blew some cash on the wrong size blower once. REALLY don't want to repeat that mistake.

How much airflow do you want coming out of the filter? I've heard 100cfm but unless there's some way to measure it really unsure how one would tell if it were right or not. Should be breeze be strong enough to say blow out a bic lighter or is that to much? Seems like if it were to strong working with spores would be somewhat problematic

any and all help greatly appreciated!

>Are the filters comparable?
Definitely!

>I've heard 100cfm

No, no..... 100 feet per minute frontal velocity.

Read these links really good:
http://www.fungifun.org/flowhood/
http://www.fungifun.org/flowhood/match.htm

and if you have any questions afterwords, ask.

OK....
you want to have a filter with 4 square feet area, this means you want a blower that delivers 400 cfm AT THE STATIC PRESSURE OF THE FILTER+Pre filter(IMPORTANT!!).

This static pressure is somewhere in the range of 1", this means you should look for a blower that delivers 400 cfm at 1".
Your blower
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/productdetail.jsp?xi=xi&ItemId=1611663772
delivers
835 CFM at 0.8" and
635 CFM at 0.9"
So this would be about right, perhaps slightly overpowered, which is better than underpowered.

Info from Anno in a previous post.

Parts for making a flow hood.

Blower motor:
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/productdetail.jsp?xi=xi&ItemId=1611630999
Grainger Item: 7C038
Price (ea) : $177.25
Manufacturer: DAYTON
Mfg. Model#: 7C038

with

Hepa filter:
http://www.filtersrx.com/sizes.asp?CAT=HEPHP9
Part Number: HSP924125
Actual Size (HxWxD): 24x12x5-7/8
Rated Airflow (SCFM): 300
Initial Resistance ("w.g.): 1.0

You should mount a good, thick prefilter(furnace filter), since the blower is a bit overpowered.

good luck!

Now thats pretty much exactly the info I was looking for thanks. The filter you listed is a bit smaller than what I was hoping to use (12x24 instead of 24x24) but if it works it works.

Anyone ever use a UV light i thier flowhood? I didn't even know these things would kill bacteria Is it a worthwhile addition or simply a waste of resources?

You can get much cheaper filters at http://www.filtersrx.com/sizes.asp?CAT=HEPHP9

Yea Right

24x12x5-7/8 HSP924125 2 $65.93 4Weeks
Shipping $115.00
--------
$ 180.93

Seems like a great deal until you try to order it. $115.00 for shipping kinda makes ordering from these folk not such a great deal. and 4 weeks delivery time is ridiculus.

Fungi Perfecti
MF2412 1 24 x 12 x 5.8 Inch Micron Filter

Total Charges
Subtotal: $129.95
Tax: $0.00 (National,State and Local taxes)
Shipping: $11.61 Via: UPS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOTAL: $141.56

So its actually cheaper to get the filter from Fungi Perfecti and only takes a week instead of 4

The plans that i was told to follow call for a 24x24x5.8" filter though and that one is

Fungi Perfecti
Total Charges
Subtotal: $229.95
Tax: $0.00 (National,State and Local taxes)
Shipping: $16.90 Via: UPS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOTAL: $246.85

FilterRX
24x24x5-7/8 HSP924245 2 $90.27 4Weeks
Shipping $115.00
$ 205.27

Another odd thing I've noticed is that both the 12x24 and the 24x24 use the same grainger blower priced at 177.27

Total for 12x24
177.27
141.56
--------
$318.83

Total for 24x24 filter + Blower

205.27
177.27
--------
$382.54

As I understand it He wants this flow hood mainly for grain to grain quart jar transfers and maybe someday to step up to agar work.

Would my friend benefit from spending the extra $60+ and going for the larger filter or is it just a waste of resources?

Thanks

Its now 2018.. Has the filter and fan industry changed over the years or is this still a staple for diy flowhoods? Thanks
