I thought for a minute your blower was positioned to be blowing in from the rear so you'd avoid turbulence, then I saw the light. Cool build.

I have only one comment, shouldn't the blower be pointing downward so that you get a uniform pressure of air flow in your filter? The way you built it might work, but the center of your filter will have a stronger current of air flow which will decrease as you get closer to the walls of your flow hood. I'm gonna build one soon and I will def. follow your blueprint (with just that minor adjustment).

Im trying to find a new blower for my hood, and found this tek,, but the blower listed, is no where near the required the correct cfm for sp 1.2  according to the spec chart here http://www.electricmotorwarehouse.com/content/Dayton/blower_specs/ITDR3.pdf ;

or am I missing something

Really great construction and attention to detail.  I realize that this post is ~10 years old at the time of this writing, but I had to drop in and give props.  I just built my first flow hood.  I didn't consider the recessed filter idea, but I like it.  I built mine in the style of most everyone else, with the filter as one of the faces of the box. 

Now that all this time has gone by, how is the recessed filter space working for you?  How would you change this design, if at all, to better suit your needs these days? (I did not read through the entire thread, so forgive me if you've addressed these questions already)

Great post, very thorough. Lots of bells and whistles.
I just wanted to add a note that the decorative/protective grille on your pre filter will reduce the free area by 15-20%. Something to consider in making calculations.
I'm sorry if this sounds like criticism, it's not. I'm new to mycology, but I install ventilation systems for a living and want to contribute to my new community.
