"What nearly all suicide terrorist attacks have in common is a specific secular and strategic goal: to compel modern democracies to withdraw military forces from territory that the terrorists consider to be their homeland."

for taking back power. religion is the excuse

Do you have a link for that quote?

Suicide attack - Muslim religious motivation
Quote:
Recent research on the rationale of suicide bombing has identified both religious and sociopolitical motivations.

According to a report compiled by the Chicago Project on Suicide Terrorism, 224 of 300 suicide terror attacks from 1980 to 2003 involved Islamist groups or took place in Muslim-majority lands. Another tabulation found a 4.5 fold increase in suicide bombings in the two years following Papes study and that the majority of these bombers were motivated by the ideology of Islamist martyrdom

It seems that a great deal of suicide bombings are religiously motivated.

I don't have a link, it was just me talking to my friend and i liked his point so i pasted it

but here's some stuff from wiki:

Quote:
wiki said:Robert Pape compiled the first complete database of every documented suicide bombing from 1980-2003. He argues that the news reports about suicide attacks are profoundly misleading — "There is little connection between suicide terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism, or any one of the world's religions". After studying 315 suicide attacks carried out over the last two decades, he concludes that suicide bombers' actions stem from political conflict, not religion.

The first suicide attack under that "muslim religious motivation tab":

Quote:
wiki said:The origins of modern Istishhadi attacks lie among the Shia in Iran during the Iran–Iraq War of 1980–1988. Mohammed Hossein Fahmideh, a 13-year-old boy who fought in the war, is said to be the first Muslim to have participated in such an attack in contemporary history. He strapped rocket-propelled grenades to his chest and blew himself up under an Iraqi tank in November 1980.

and where is the proof that the few quran verses that support this action weren't developed as a response to the geopolitical battles that the people who wrote those texts were waging at the time?

The section on japanese kamikazee fighters comes from cultural influence, not religious.

If belief had any restraining power then America, as a self-declared Christian nation, would not be the world's largest arms dealer and the most bellicose nation on earth.

Take an educated guess. Are there more or less theists in prison than nontheists as compared to the surrounding region?

"theists kill for money, power, land"
we haven't even gotten into people who aren't really practicing their religion properly, but this as good an example as ever.
Let's say somebody identifies as straight but they regularly have sex with men - would you still call them straight?
Somebody is on a diet to lose weight but they eat fast food every meal - are they still on a diet?

Something lik 80to90 percent of americans identify with a religion. If there weren't more theists than atheists in prison that'd be very strange.

I don't understand the relevance of this question... why would it matter if those verses were developed as a response to the geopolitical battles the people who wrote them were waging at the time?

How many witches were killed by atheists for practicing dark arts or mere herbal treatments?

Magic mushrooms were initially made illegal by Franciscans for being an affront to the God that created them. Now list the substances made illegal by atheists as an affornt to their non-beliefs.

Mao did something called the "Mass Line" and basicly wiped out as much opium use as possible in china.

And i don't think it's possible for a religion to ban any substance in america, thanks to the constitution. That's the government's handy work, not religion.

Our government's policies are highly influenced by Christian ethics... through its influence on our government, Christianity has essentially banned certain substances.

These guys keep missing the point no matter how clearly it is explained. I knew the +1 extra reason to kill was going to stump the brilliant thinkers here.

I will try one last time:

Am atheist would never kill for a belief in an ancient scripture nor for an all powerful being. Never.

Someone please name a reason that an atheist might kill that a theist would never ever do so for. (And try to do it WITHOUT using The True Scotsman Fallacy!)

because we're talking about whether or not suicide bombing is predominantly motivated by geopolitical purposes or simply because religion tells someone to do it.

But i guess the origin of something does not necessarily have to do with how it's being used now

You are blaming religion for killing the doctors and our drug rights, and shedding blood, but no facts to back it up aside from isolated incidents of abortion doctors getting capped.

You ask how many atheists have killed for their god? 0.

Well how many christians have killed because there is no god? 0.

So, if they are using a Quran verse to justify their violent behavior, how does this not mean that they are motivated by religion?

Are you actually unaware of Christianity's influence on modern drug policy? :what:

Do you really think that religiously motivated bloodshed is limited to just a few isolated incidents? :what:

Jeffrey Dahmer, an infamous serial killer and atheist sentenced to 900 years in prison, said “if a person doesn’t think that there is a God to be accountable to, then what’s the point of trying to modify your behavior to keep it within acceptable ranges?”. He brutally killed seventeen men and boys, dismembering them, storing their parts and indulging in cannibalism and necrophilia. In 1991, he was caught by the police after one of his would-be victims escaped.

It has already been shown that a belief in God is not a deterrent to any form of behavior so I have no idea what point you are attempting to make.

"There are basically two kinds of philosophy. One's called prickles, the other's called goo. And prickly people are precise, rigorous, logical. They like everything chopped up and clear. Goo people like it vague. For example, in physics, prickly people believe that the ultimate constituents of matter are particles. Goo people believe it's waves. And in philosophy, prickly people are logical positivists, and goo people are idealists." - Alan Watts

Logical positivists, like most of the people on this board, tend to be atheistic. Likewise, idealists (aronf13, Kant, Leibniz) tend to be theists.

But don't we all really know it's prickly goo and gooey prickles? Come on, people. That is, unless you think it's fun to keep running in circles like children.
