Christians v. Lions
    #2170003 - 12/08/03 11:03 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I was thinking about the conversation we were having about whether atheists were more moral than Christians (or Buddhists or whomever). I think it might have been me who said that atheists are more moral because they don't have a God or bible to tell them to be good, that they are good on their own.

But who made the rules by which atheists live their lives? Who told them what is moral?

I read a book a long time ago by Jean Jacques Rousseau called “A Social Contract”. He said that at one time, we were just hunters and gatherers who roamed the earth. After a while, people decided they didn’t want to chase their food or forage for it in different places any more.

They had to create rules about how to live with each other. Those who were tired of roaming and wanted to settle in one place would have to stake out their land and get others to agree with them that that land would be theirs and no one would steal it from them.

Those who were tired of foraging for food could claim an apple tree that was growing on a plot of land, and others had to agree that they wouldn’t try to steal the apples or take the tree or land.

This would be when “morals” were created. Basically, agreements between people that they wouldn’t steal each other’s women, food or land.

Regardless of who believed in God and who didn’t, people had to agree to not steal.

So atheists can’t say that they are more moral because they are “good” even though they don’t have a God or bible telling them what to do. Morals had to be created at some time in the way far distant past, so that we could all live with each other in harmony. There are going to be good atheists and bad atheists, and good Christians and bad Christians, because in each group you are going to have your individuals who decide not to adhere to the social contract.

There is the possibility that some morals are biological.
Empathy is likely biological, so doing something that harms others, especially loved ones will result in guilt.
