Why are atheists more moral?
    #2166643 - 12/07/03 03:56 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Is it because they don't have a book or a cause to hide their sins behind?

doesnt make any sense to me, please explain how an athiestic existentialist is "more" moral than a theistic existentialist.

In my (humble) opinion, morals are defined by (dictionary.com) as Of or concerned with the judgment of the goodness or badness of human action and character: moral scrutiny; a moral quandary. - which leads me to point out the bold - without that big guy, gal, or group of people upstairs on mount olympus watching over us, it leaves us to make our own decisions of what is right and wrong. Fuck having the Catholic church tell us what we can and cannot do - there are some basic guidelines but in the end only the people partaking in a situation know the true variables. Murder is evil, under the right circumstances - adultery is evil, under the right circumstances... I'm not saying it's ok to do these things, but to blindly say it's wrong just cause some book says so is not my idea of freedom.

once again I conclude that the church is not only a waste of time, bus a cause of pain, suffering, and denial.

Not the saint, but the sinner that repenteth, is he to whom the full length and breadth, and height and depth, of life's meaning is revealed. Good and evil loose all objective meaning and are seen as equally necessary and contrasting elements in the masterpiece that is the universe.

wow, the church is bad, what a revelation. I think the church most likely provides a lot of good things to alot of people, like if you're down on your luck, with nowhere to go, you can always go to your local baptist church and sing a happy song with your fellow humans.

but yeah, the church is evil, but its also really good...duality.

That is a good question.

There are more people that believe in God, in this country, than don't. I think they stand out more when they say they believe in God and they do something immoral because if you believe in God, you're supposed to act in a moral manner.

Those who don't believe in God, it doesn't seem too bad when they do something immoral because they don't have a moral code. Well, they must have some kind of moral code, but not one based on the bible.

But it's also going to be more noticeable when someone acts immorally who also believes in God because there's more Christians than not.

But also, it does seem that people who are atheists do seem to have higher morals, and don't seem to violate their own sense of morals.

I have known so many people who profess to be Christian, and they lie, cheat and steal.

It probably doesn't matter that people say they believe in God or don't, and whether their morals has anything to do with it. People are people and they do bad things whether they believe in God or not. It just looks worse when someone professes to believe in God, for some reason.

I disagree. Original monotheists (and by original I mean before the institutions forked up) or true polytheists are moral, too. The original monotheistic scriptures (the Bible, the Quran and the Torah), essentially the same book, have a strong moral basis: the ten commandments and the Jewish laws. Don't know about the Quran though, haven't read a copy yet, but I'll assume it has a lot of guidelines for the righteous life.
On polytheists: the true polytheists (the ones who acknowledge unity in all the different forms of the divine) also have a good morality, because they naturally feel the intertwinedness of all existence. I'm reading a book on myths right now, and it explains it fairly well. It's a Dutch book, so it probably won't do most of you any good if I list its detailed information.

i dont really know which as a group is more moral

but IF atheists are more moral, then here is one possible reason

some religious people believe that they can do bad things, and then just ask God for forgiveness and it will be okay then
That God cares more about whether or not they believe in Him than how good they are

I know what you mean. My sister and her husband are bible thumpers. They go around doing good things for people who need help. But when my mom was in the hospital, being the good christians that they are, they went to clean her place and threw away all the books she had been collecting because they were not christian books. They weren't "good" for my mom to be reading.

She was very upset by that, but felt she couldn't complain because they had been so "nice" to clean her place for her. I think that was an evil thing to do.

Yep, when their religious beliefs actually overlap their common sense and common courtesy and equal-respect for other things, thats when they need serious help.

Stalin was an aethiest and he wasn't exactly known to be a good moral chap..There's also been Atheist regimes in Mexico responsible for murderng tens of thousands of people.. Most of these athiest regimes start by banning organized religion which is a step futher then simply telling someone there going to hell..

Okay, but what about the crusades?

Also, another story:

Someone I knew professed to go to church every Sunday. He believed in God and prayed and even had a neat little speech he used to give on his theory of the bible and it's relevance to E=MC2. But he was doing under-handed things for the purpose of making money. He was a liar, cheater and a thief.

At least when someone is an atheist and then they act as if there is no consequence for their actions, and no rules to govern them, they are acting in conformity with their beliefs.

When someone professes to be a Christian, and they do bad, they are hypocrites and worse than Stalin and whoever else you mentioned.

But don't most atheists have a moral code? I think we go to extremes when we invoke the names of Hitler and people like that.

be?night?ed ( P ) Pronunciation Key (b-ntd)
adj.
Overtaken by night or darkness.
Being in a state of moral or intellectual darkness; unenlightened.

On second thought, no, I don't think it's benighted. Why do you think it's benighted?
