Atheism makes me a sad pup. I don't know if it's because of my upbringing, my culture, my genetics, etc., but I need God to function at my optimum level.

Too much work, but if Pascal was correct, then as I have repeatedly pointed out, why are Christians as a whole slightly less moral than atheists and agnostics? This has been borne out by large-scale social studies on things like child and spouse abuse, infidelity, divorce, obseity, alcoholism, cheating on taxes and so on. The weak conter-argument is that most are not 'true' Christians, but here is the deal: even if only a small percentage truly took Jesus into their hearts and changed their lives for the better, the results would show up in their behavior on such studies.

Christians take a marriage vow before God, their families, friends and their spouse.

Atheists/agnostics take a marriage vow before their families, friends and their spouse.

Yet the Christian divorce rate is HIGHER! How is this possible?

I'd say it's because atheists/agnostics are on the whole smarter people. It's pretty difficult to have faith in the face of modern science—whose metaphysics are physicalistic—and intellectual modern-day theists seem to know that.

In all honesty, the "weak" argument you cite is in my opinion valid. Most modern-day Christians don't even know what philosophy is, so they haven't contemplated ethics, morality, consciousness, mystical experience, etc.; as far as they're concerned, they're forgiven in the eyes of God for whatever immoral acts they commit. Rather than pursuing Christlikeness, they just wallow in grace.

I've been around religious people a lot of my life, and believe me none of them are any more optimal than anyone else.
The trick it seems is that being able to fall back on faith makes it really easy to pretend that one is complete.

Life's hard, but you'll make it. With or without a crutch.

Maybe it's you who's misconstruing. Other than the violence, from where I sit, you and the suicide bomber seem pretty much alike.

And I can't honestly tell if god wants us to be violent or not either. There are faithful who say yes, and faithful who say no. They both point to old books and "their heart" as substantiation.

Meanwhile god, if he exists, is AWOL leading to both Mother Theresa and Abdul the Suicide Bomber living among us.

Faith? No thanks. That crap is WAY more depressing than a neutral "I don't know shit, but I have many suspicions" attitude, as someone more eloquent than I once said.

I can't argue with that. He also claims to have had some pretty intense metaphysical experiences (e.g., seeing the future) and I'm pretty sure he didn't do drugs.

I know what you're talking about, but you probably won't find much more sympathy for that here. Pretty dyed-in-the-wool atheists rule the roost.

I was raised as an atheist, but for some reason, again, I know exactly what you're talking about. I try to be gnostic about it because I really hate organized religion and social control systems in general, but yeah, it's really nice having God (or something like it) in your life. Kinda prefer it. :shrug:

I suppose because it's such an emotional topic, debates over it tend to get heated and we turn from civilized discourse to angry and childish ranting. Really, it just has to come down to an "agree to disagree" kind of thing because humanity isn't to a point where universal gnosis is possible.
