Simple. We know that calling somebody a name like nigger or faggot (...eggh) is done to cause harm to the person, to display one's total disrespect for the person and the category to which he belongs. Why else? We also know that it often results in its intended effect. We can speculate about deeper reasons for "why" the person feels a need to do this, but I don't think it is neccesary. Intentionally harming someone else conflicts with my, and many others, basic value of excercising compassion for others. Therefore, I, and others, label it not cool.

Words stir reactions in people.
They are the triggers for emotions.
These triggers are taught and hardwired by conditioning.
Similiar to pavlovian dogs.

I've imagined what it would be like to be black and have someone call me a nigger.
Someone like a friend that I had grown up with who happened to be white.
Although this friends intentions are not to hurt, it probably still would.
The history associated with the word...can never really be ignored.
The word would be very demeaning. I would feel that I could call this friend of mine an equally derogative word, but, the sense of satisfaction that would come from that equally derogative word wouldn't make the situation equal. Whites were never discriminated against, hung, used as slaves, segregated...etc. Whites used to call these people niggers. Even years later, even in jest, the word would still hurt.... if I was black. So have some compassion and watch what ya say...even in jest....you fucken dick.

I am definately not about censorship, but each individual needs to govern his/her own behavior, thereby making censorship unnecessary. I am offended by the spoken and written use of these slang terms even though none of them apply to my own sexuality or ethnicity. They DO apply to some of my loved ones, however.

I do not see anything philosophical about this kind of display. The writer is VERY clearly adolescent, because this is the same kind of thing I encounter on a daily basis when adolescents come to my counseling room and ask me "can we curse here?" Or alternatively, they will say "fuck" or "shit" or something to check my reaction. I can tell if it's a spontaneous expression of emotion, or if it's just a juvenile attempt to use lots of vulgar (and boring, unimaginative) language. Other group members get all excited by the prospect of using 'bad words' in front of an adult. If it's spontaneous, I just listen. If it's a juvenile testing of limits - as it appears to be here - I say something like "watch the language."

It is not the words, per say, as much as the game-playing, or stupid imsensitivity to others that I find behind the use of such words. If it was up to me, I'd lock this kind of thing down and delete it just because it lowers the standard of any medium to have certain emotion-laden words printed for the above reasons. I for one don't want to hear or read anyone's mental diarrhea.

As a side note to the discussion at hand, the quoted statement is inaccurate. All these things have happened to white people, you are just not aware of it. For instance, the term 'slave' has the same roots as 'slavic,' relating to slavic people - who were held as slaves. As a person of slavic ancestry, I am currently seeking reparations...

I'm only afected if it's done with the intention to directly offend me but normally my answer is to reply showing a  middle finger... an image worth a 1000 words. In my coubtry we normally salute each other calling names, translating is something like "How's that sucker ?" or "Fuck you, i haven't see you in a long time." or in a normall talk or discusion "fuck, that shit is great", anyway we use so many fucking words like this that it has become a natural thing, even my suit&tie boss is allways name calling everything he dislikes.
