Renunciation and Universal Love

renunciation and universal love rings true for me. but is this just some bias left over by christianity? is there really a connection between these two things and why?

Renunciation isn't about repressing our desires and natural urges.  That is a perversion, and it leads to all kinds of terribleness (as Icelander implied). 

Renunciation is about understanding the nature of our desires and urges.  Once understood, we abandon that which hinders us just as we would take shelter during a rain storm.  It is a decision that arises not by force, moral rigidity or self-effacement, but as the natural result of developing insight in to the actual nature of our own tendencies, their causes, and their effects.

Once we have gained such insight, our desires and urges no longer have the power to captivate our experience and cloud our view.  This allows us to see directly how the same desires and the same urges have gripped other people, driving them in to all kinds of heartache and misery.  When you combine the sense of peace that comes with being liberated from compulsive behaviour with the sense of empathy that comes with witnessing others driven by the same compulsions, the seed of universal love begins to sprout.  If it is cultivated, it will blossom in to unsurpassed enlightenment.

If you were listening you'd see I'm saying that one need not restrict their urges and that need not cause misery and suffering.

I saw that.  What I'm trying to get at is the idea that urges are not intrinsically wrong or bad.  I'm just wondering if that's what you are saying.  If I'm wrong then it's not an issue.

Back in ancient hellenistic times, before internet porn and masturbation was invented, young men got horny and ejaculated wherever they went and in any hole they encountered. This led to a lot of legal trouble when real estate was to be inherited many years later, so the concept of renunciation was introduced to compensate for that.

'Renunciation and Realization are the same. They are different aspects of the same state. Giving up the non-self is renunciation. Inhering in the Self is ‘Jnana’ or Self-Realization'

Another way of saying it is giving up what you are not & being what you truly are, are both aspects of the one truth.
If you exist as what you truly are then what you are not is given up, and if you give up what you are not you will exist as what you truly are.
