Mushroom Use in Ancient China in "wai-tan"

Does anyone have information relating to this alchemy In China? It was a search for immortality through various drugs, herbs, and chemicals. I was wondering about mushroom use in china or if it was included in any rituals by wai-tan chemists or shamans.

i know all about alchemy in china. i dont think psychedelic mushrooms were included, they focused on "cinnabar" which is mercury, which why they all died trying to be immortal.

actually....the whole thing is really fucked up and stupid.

the process to create the elixer was really complicated....so if you made one mistake (making it on the wrong day etc) you would die of poisining.

and once you made the "perfect elixer" you had to drink it in private, in a special are with the correct flow of qi in the environment. and, even if you did become immortal, your body would still die.

its really insane....but...drinking mercury in small doses causes severe brain damage...so...its understandable.

The immortality elixirs were a real flop. They took some classical writings on the nature of the universe and interpreted them literally. Basically it was the ultimate excercise in missing the point. Not a healthy practice at all. Mercury has some kind of symbolism to them... has something to do with the strangeness of a metal also being a liquid. In the daoist mind this has something to do with immortality, so the people read the books and were like "Ah, the secret to immortality is DRINKING MERCURY!" I'll get some more info on it and maybe I can explain better, cause I'm curious too.

So, no, you're not going to find any real wisdom coming from these people, but if you're interested in the principles these guys failed to grasp, check out the Inner Teachings of Daoism. It's a daoist classic and shouldn't be too hard to find.

i'd say skip the inner teachings and go straight to "the zhuangzi", its the best daoist text.

but...i have heard rumours about some group of daoist philosophers that started doing mushrooms, and then left society to go liv in the forest.....i dont know theyre name, or if theyre real....but it is a rumour

there is a lot of ancient chineese art depicting mushrooms, of course you find that in about every culture, and with mushrooms being so beautiful and all, i can see why, but i bet there was some folks that stumbled upon the sacred shroom and knew there was something to it.

No, not really. I was curious to see if they existed. I could not find any references to the above.
I do not know what you mean by reaching. Hoping? Wishing? Could you explain?


As far as the Dao, I have been a reader for years, even the TIbetan book of life and death was a helpful favorite... Be in the now.... thanks for your responces.
