If Physical Immortality was Possible
    #1133349 - 12/11/02 07:32 PM (14 years, 2 days ago)

As a loose correlary to the cloning issue, if a genetic biologist discovered a way to stop the telomeres from snipping the markers that limit cell regeneration and it led to potential physical immortality:

1. Would you do the treatment?

2. Would this be moral in the eyes of your religion / belief?

3. What would be the planetary repercussions if treatment was free?

4. What would be the planetary repercussions if treatment was extremely expensive?

--------------------

The proof is in the pudding.

1. No. Boredom would put an end to many lives, I think.
2. No. I think life should be a temporary experience.

1. No way in hell! I would, however, like to be cryogenically frozen and brought back to life just in time to see the end of the world.

2. Seeing as how Nature is my God, this would be completely immoral in the eyes of my religion. Death is the most natural thing I can think of, and to prevent death is to go completely against Nature!

3. Plantary repurcussions? Well, obviously the planet would become incredibly overpopulated! Population would explode in unprecedented proportions, and eventually there would be nothing left but old, immortal, unhappy humans piled on top of one another.

4. Hmm... I think what I said would happen in answer #3 would still happen, but just at a slower rate.

Interesting idea and good questions, Swami!

4- I don't want to think about that....

1. No, but i would do a treatment that slowed down the aging effects of "time"
2. Unknown religion at moment. But to be truely Immortal, One could be considerd a god.
3. The begining of Choas.
4. Great Wars would be fought by them.

1. Yes
2. sure, why not
3. massive overpopulation and resource extinction. within 200 years we'd have a population of like 100 billion. everybody would end up dead from spread of disease or lack of food.
4. if it were expensive you would have people like bill gates, strom thurmond, a few celebreties. depends on how expensive it is because a lot of people could make getting immortality surgery their big life goal to buy after a house. the avg middle class family could afford maybe a couple million $. so instead of using the 401k for your fishing boat and old folks shit, buy yourself youth,

1.  I don't know.

2.  I don't know.

3.  Death, no wait, that cannot happen.

4.  Bill Gates is evil because he is rich.

If it is extremely expensive it would depend upon whether or not Hillary got her way.

If medicine was only a socialist program whoever was on the top of the list would get the treatment and Bill Gate's money wouldn't make a difference so he would suffer with the rest of those at the bottom of the list.  Wouldn't that be great?

1. Yes.

2. Yes.

3. Shitloads of people getting really bored and creative until overpopulation forces us into space or oblivion.

4. Evil corporations would never be handed over to that spoiled punk-ass little kid who could possibly run it into the ground due to inexperience.

In the future people's minds are uploaded into giant computers for free, but are charged by the hour for consciousness.

This has brought about a new form of slavery and some young rich girls use the deceased poor as dolls, and sometimes wear them as jewelry.

1. It depends... will my connective tissue keep growing? *imagines himself with 7-inch diameter ears and football-sized nose* Eww...

2. Sure.

3. Overpopulation which would eventually lead to a new question "Reproduction: Should it go on?" (China is already dealing with that one in a not-so-happy manner).

4. Some sort of fight between the haves and the have-nots. After the haves win (superior technology etc.), they'll have to answer to the predicament of overpopulation/reproduction.

-------------------------------
I'd just like to say that I'd want all my friends and family to do it as well. That way I wouldn't have to deal with all my loved ones dying off (we've all seen Highlander- that would suck).

There are some other interesting questions:

A. Would life get boring after a few hundred years?
B. How much progression would there be?
C. How would immortality restructure society?
D. What would happen to religion?

and on and on and on...

Note: In desperate need of a cure...

3.Overpopulation, resource exhausting, less risk taking.
4. Rich live forever. Poor have another reason to become rich.

A. Would life get boring after a few hundred years?

Well, I dont think so... I could occupy myself with mastering intelectual domains and then proceed to the arts. This could take a nice 200 or 500 years between saving up the money for the education and actually being educated(not to mention mastering!).

Now what im curious about is, how good medicine will be. Sure i live forever but will there be a cure for heart disease? Cancer? Dementia? Stroke? If all this is adequately cured or prevented, then accidents would take start to climb the common reason for death. I bet somewhere around your 200 or 300th year, the risk of you being killed would heightned or somthing!

Also eventually the person you are now will be dead anyway. Old memories will fade, and eventually be lost forever. First, you won't remember your childhood, then your 20's and 30's.

Eventually every part of you that is who you are now will no longer exist. The existing mind will have some similarities to the origional since for a while it was used as the scaffold upon which all the succcessive minds were built, but eventually any resemblance to the origional person will be lost.

1.  Depends on how much it costs.....afterall i'm immortal anyways
2.  I follow my own spirituality and I wouldn't have a problem with it
3.  Can we say people season starts in June.........hmmm should I take the pump or the automatic
4.Oppression on an unprecedented scale

1. Yes like a shot. If i got tired of it id take a painless way out.
2. Completely. Nature is my religion and I dont believe we can do anything against nature, we aint that powerful yet!! and as for morality its relative anyway.
3. Space colonization would be a neccessity instead of a dream.
4. Would depend if us poor folks new about it. It could already be happening (tongue firmly in cheek!!) otherwise Sadly, I think alot of the "immortals" would find their lives curtailled by more brutal means than old age.

1)no
2) its immoral because not even the gods are immortal, there is a place for those who die with sword in hand and i want my spot.
3) massive overpopulation-> starvation-> death. unless this treatment puts a stopper on that as well
4) we'd have rich warlords killing eachother for resources (if the treatment doesnt prevent starvation) and then the rich warlords would eat humans till they starved (if the treatment doesnt prevent it)
