Entertaining question on karma
    #14953467 -

This is based off only 'if karma is true'.

Okay, so if this is a natural occurance and can be gained or lost in a number of ways..

Say one person committed an act that resulted in bad karma, and the punishment for this act is 30 minutes of depression, now the person is 5 minutes in and takes a pill to relieve himself of the depression. But he still has 25 minutes to go..

So to you karma gurus, taking any medication to cure something that effects you mentally and emotionally, is it really just prolonging the inevitable? Since if karma is true any suffering you experience is because of bad karma.

everything is karma, so taking the medicine was karma too. karma is not a subset of existence, it's the very fabric of it, we can't escape it. if taking the medicine prevented depression, then you would stop exhausting the 'depression-karma', but if you still have that karma left it will surface again in the future, one way or another.

karma isn't just good and bad, reward and punishment - that's a very christian interpretation of it. karma is simply cause and effect, it's the author of every being's existence. there's no god in buddhism that's punishing you for things, previous actions just leave the 'karmic potentiality' in the mindstream which ripens when the right causes and conditions come together.

also, you shouldn't prolong suffering thinking that it's exhausting your karma, unless you're omniscient and can see the karma. when an opportunity arises to cease suffering, that could signify the end of the karma you were exhausting through suffering, and should be embraced (assuming you don't like suffering). so if there's medicine for a disease or illness, by all means take it :sun:

I see, with karma any suffering will always balance out, with complete 'faith' in karma, there is nothing wrong with anything in existence, because it will always balance out.

So basically there's 2 systems out there, one requires an omnipotent being for balance, and the other is a natural system of balance.

I've been entertaining karma for sometime.. in the beginning everytime I would experience something like dropping a piece of bread, an immediate explanation for it popped up in my head, is that common?

I'll admit that I have no idea. :shrug2: I just hope that good actions will have some type of reward and horrendously bad actions will have some type of retribution. For all I know, reincarnation could be completely random. How do you calculate the karma of an insect, or a plant, or even a human with learning disabilities? Can organisms really be held accountable for their ignorance?

Yeah, I get what you're saying, I guess we can all plead ignorance until 'true' law is established.. I'm not sure how well that would work if one knows something to be wrong and does it anyway, such as child predators, I don't believe people like that have any room for excuse. We need a more intricate law system when it comes to decision making, things that would effect us when we reincarnate, not just the laws that we are bound to depending on what country we live in.
But then again, maybe the true 'way' hasn't been paved and has yet to be traveled. We need to create a path that applies to everyone, there's too many different 'ways' out there for us to be sure which 'way' is right.

Of course not. I was mainly referring to more subtle things that only spiritually-minded people would take notice of.

There wouldn't be any spiritual people on earth if those people didn't believe in afterlives/karma/God/etc. People can't be blamed for not believing in such things. They can't be blamed for living a selfish life as opposed to an altruistic one.

Those beliefs are mainly dependent upon the way people were raised, the values they were taught, the information they were exposed to, the age they were at the time of death, and the overall environment they grew up in. Such things are beyond our control. Not everyone is given equal opportunities in life. That's why ignorance has to be a factor in the determination of a soul's destination.

 I agree

contrary to what IMO is popular belief,  karma is not some abstract independent thing for one to "believe in", which passes out judgments in the form of reward or punishment

it's more like karma is where and what you are right now at this very moment, in a way

I also agree with you about cause-and-effect, and in this way karma does generally seem to manifest in the future as opposed to right now...

 but as they say, life is what you make it
