.. to get medical care in jail.

Here's the story full story

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110621/ts_yblog_thelookout/man-robs-bank-to-get-medical-care-in-jail

What kind of impact do you think this kind of event has on society ? Will other people unable to provide healthcare for themselves take the route of 1 dollar robberies like this clever man ?
Where is it all headed ?

Discuss.

if abused it will probably lead to the alteration of the laws that govern medical care for prisoners.  If they are talking about cutting medicare for the elderly, I don't see why we shouldn't cut it for prisoners first

Next thing you know, obese people will start to commit crimes just so they can go to jail and get stuck with a strict diet of 3 meals a day.

I live in central New york and a good friend of my Dad's works the local county jail.  He hates the health care provided to the inmates with a passion.  Everything is paid for by the county, and there are very few limits on treatment.

According to him, the worst is the dental.  Up until 10 years ago, the most they would pay for was an extraction, but now they have access to full dental.  Overall, the inmates health and dental coverage is better than 90% of the guards who watch them, and it's all free.

He knows of a few people who actually look forward to jail because of this, and will choose to spend time in jail rather than paying out of it.  But as to actually committing a crime just for the coverage, I haven't heard anything.

I think that there will be a few copycats, plenty of coverage on this guy, and nothing changed.

Yeah just lock em up and let em rot.

Since the state seems so interested in taking guardianship then they should also provide for his welfare.

It's not a bad strategy really and I applaud the dude for using his brain to get what he needed.  In most other contexts he would be called an embodiment of the american dream.

I wouldn't say let 'em rot, but something does need to be changed.

In regards to the bank robber, I think he was rather ingenious in exploiting a flaw in a system to his advantage and I applaud him.  But I also think that the things that led up to this exploitation should be fixed.  This would include both his lack of healthcare and the free healthcare provided to inmates.

The gentleman in question is, I believe, eligible in 4 years through his social security benefits, but is currently not covered and unable to provide coverage.  I also don't expect that joke of a healthcare bill to give him any help either.  Instead of a convoluted mess, they should've started small; something like so many free doctor's visit a year, a monthly allowance($25-100) for medication, stuff like that.  Then maybe this guy and others like him would have to go to extremes to live and stay healthy.

In regards to the inmates recieving free healthcare, I think that should stop, sort-of.  They should still be able to recieve healthcare, but not free.  I think they should work for it like the rest of us.  Prisons are already a massive drain on the economy, thanks in large part to the failed war on drugs.  We've all heard of some kid getting 5-10 years for some trumped up drug charge.

But aside from cleaning out the prisons, they could also become self sufficient.  Why not put the inmates to work?  There are programs in place in prisons across the country that work already, like growing their own food.  I've always heard fairly positive things about them, like reducing costs to the state and reducing trouble in the prison.  Not only that, but the inmates could learn something other than how to be a better criminal.  This could be applied to healthcare as well.  Work and get coverage.  Work well, get better coverage.

It's just a thought.

It's a great advert for universal care though.

Some good thoughts here.  Prisons should be self sufficient AT LEAST with their food for God's sake.  And you don't gotta pay anyone to do the gardening as the prisoners should do it, and do it well if they want to be fed.  The prison system is far too comfortable for inmates nowadays, and far too expensive for the taxpayers who work their asses off to pay for it :mad2:

Prisons being self sufficient is fine, but it won't pay for the doctors. Make the operation for profit, and you're giving prisoners jobs in the face of massive unemployment?

Chain them to a wall in a facility with no electricity for a few months, and people will naturally seek to avoid doing time.

What else are you going to do when the money runs out?

Yeah, good idea.  But then there are human rights activists who would be strongly opposed to this lol.

I agree though, all inmates should work, half of their time in rehabilitation, the other half creating profit to cover the costs of the prison.

The scenario in the OP could have happened any time since the 60's, but I think there's a certain relevance to such stories in today's climate because of the growing realization that free markets and service oriented economies might be imminently unstable.

So the story is both an excellent advertisement for universal care, and perhaps a sign of the times. Activists might be opposed, but if things went South, I don't think there would be many of them around, and prisoner rehab would be considered a failed experiment. Those things cost money too.
