i have never had a job that i've liked, with perhaps the exception of modeling. so, i found myself asking myself, do i really have to work? given my ingenuity, i'm sure i don't, yet i'm also sure i can be completely autonomous - i don't need a sugar daddy to take care of me.
as it stands, i don't go to work, i just work for myself. i throw pots and make teddy bears, and i also help a friend renovate his duplex. i don't need much, just enough to pay rent, buy food, drugs, a few books and cds, a few dinner dates, and a concert or so each month.
i used to have a lover who i lived with who probably had a million dollars in assets, a fucking humongous occult library and temple and beautiful oasis of a garden and all this shit, which he didn't have the time to enjoy (i sure did, though). but i can do with out all that stuff, there's an even bigger oasis, called nature, and it's free. there's the public library and my friends. there's a vast amount of free music on the internet. there are billions of ways to entertain myself without money, and they're just as enriching.
i'm going to the John Campbell Folk School (www.folkschool.com) to learn other crafts, to learn stone carving, stained glass, and storytelling this round. i just want to branch out, 'cuz already making pots and bears is getting doll... er dull... if i could, i'd make a machine that would make pots and bears for me, a randomized one, to make each its own unique piece. i'd sit around and smoke dope and have wild discussions and write and play mandolin and have sex all day long. is there really anything wrong with that?

this thread is for posing ideas and alternatives to working, for those who think it's for suckers.

I too am perfectly happy with Nature and the Public Library.

I feel the same way about working in today's society... It just sucks!  :mad:

As for proposing alternatives... I've been trying to think of some good ones since I started my very first job!  I haven't been very successful at coming up with any practical ideas, though.

Hopefully someone else here can help me out!  I'm not very good at throwing pots, and I doubt I'd be any good at making teddy bears.  :crazy:

I am only 19 years old, i was fired from my pizza delivery job cause i just stopped showing up to work. I do know one day i will probibly have to get a job somewhere or somehow. But i really don't want to. I just want to enjoy doing things i like. The hard part is. I really have no fucking clue as to what i like.

Holy shit, where do I sign up? :grin: I agree 100% that working for yourself is the way to go if you can manage it. I sell things on Ebay occasionally for side money and it is more rewarding than my regular job, but it is not enough to live off of. I'm married so the dynamic is different, I have to be responsible for more than myself alone. What is important to me is that any job I do I must do well, to the best of my ability. That makes even the most difficult, dreary job personally rewarding. I think this quote from T.S. Eliot is instructive;

gorw and raise your own veg and meat. gorw my own pot/shrooms and have enough moeny to bay the bills and a little spending moeny.

what the hell am i doing here... its time to get moving. this society won't wait for you.. this machine will break you. its time to let go. i must release my fears of death and just leave. where to go? i dunno. maybe a trip to the corners of my mind. with nothing on my mind, no concept of time. i envy the insane, and work to get there. i will make my own reality, my reality. how old do we live too... 70? not me, if i go tomorrow i'm happy, if i go in 30 years i'm happy. but nothing must hold you back. get all your money, buy a handful of acid and a cheap car. drive till your out of acid and gas, then leave your car. walk to some food. trip again.. live till your dead. there is no future.... so yea, i'm going.. see you there.

i'm well 50 something...
and 2 kids, one still in HS & the other one not yet flew the coop (i'm hoping...)
playing householder game until commitments are honored...
ya, i'd love to take off my shoes, laze around in a hammock & learn to play the flute...
payin taxes sucks, workin solid 40+ sucks, bein single parent sucks...
and so it goes...
but we do the best we can with what we've got...
try not to do terminal damage to loved-ones, friends, casusal acquatences, or passersby...
and when the householder game is completed, well... there may still be a bit o' gas in the ol' tank, eh?
& if i could find the right folks to practice my martian on, well, "our nest is yours" isn't that the way of the saying?

I agree.

I have been unemployed for a while now and I noticed that all my money just gets sucked up by companies and the Government.......I hate paying 2,000 dollars a year for car insurance! I hate the cost of housing! I hate how land has to be bought! AHHHH!

Fuck work, though i wouldn't consider myself lazy though.

If work, wasn't so draining on the body, and mind, then i would work.

I DON'T WANT TO BECOME A BATTERY! , but what can i do. My only other option is homelessness, if i wish to get out of the hell hole im in. I can't stand the people i live with, there born to be slaves, they LOVE IT.

My aunt LOVES TO BUST ASS, and if others around her doesn't, then it eats at her. Same with my whole damm family if one is more "energy conservative" (i don't care to bust ass, but i don't mind chores) then they have to think of something for me to do.

Basically you are dirt if your not working (job), scum. You get NO respect.

Its just a sad sad slave mentality.

become an architect. make some nice building so people like YOU can operate in this world with a little less stress. so you dont have to be a slave to conventionality. and make things so that people can expand their lives, while at the same time expanding my own. taking my own experiences and pains through life and tranforming it into a vision to try and change the world. working for myself while doing what i want, and helping out other people... maybe even some travelling...

i think we all have a "place" here, we just have to find it. most people fuck this place up cause they dont really have a vision of anything at all, they let themselves fall to the 2+2 evaluation they got by their guidance councelors. im sorry... but i think those things are shit.

i think we need people to speak out, and try to make their presence known in this world, it will be the only way we get this place to be what we want it to be.

you are a person, you exist, you make an affect on this world. your actions dont go un noticed.
