Re: The Group Mind At Concerts [Re: JackofSpades]

So its more along the lines of the mind just picking up on mental vibrations from others and moving in harmony with them (musically and with dance)? As opposed to people verbally entering one another's mental thought processes and ideas?

yes indeed,

course many folk need to believe it's something magical.

So I guess my question is, how much was I central in this? It just seemed to me like I was in control of everything, not so much the group but more me. It seemed like I overtook the group mind and was able to control it on my own.

Thats just what it seemed like...Is this probable? Or did it just appear that way to me?

'I' is not what most people think it is.

The 'I' that is thinking and in control is composed of countless social relations and experiences that have gone into forming that self.

And now you want to know what to think.
You're only going to draw your own conclusion anyways, so perhaps some time and critical thinking are the best help to you.

Perhaps its best just to not understand things and enjoy them for what they're worth.

Jack of Spades, I don't think people's responses here have been too accurate. It is not a matter of true or not true... because it is in part true and in part false.
What is true is that you were an integral part of the concert. What is false is that you in particular played any special role in the experience or energy of the crowd as a whole. It was the musicians who were playing the special role. However, the synchronisation between everyone causes added effect.
When people are dancing to the music, the musicians gain confidence and play with more feeling. If the feeling is in sync with your body's beat or sway, you will dance more obviously to the flow of the band, and this will be percieved on two levels - by the band (minimally.. because you are just one person in a huge crowd) and by the audience (proportional to how close you are to them/ how visible you are to them). There is not a single, blatant connection directly between everyone but rather, all of the factors end up finding harmony through many different feedback loops.

However, the overwhealming feelings of connectedness are caused by the drugs. Feelings of connectedness are just forms of attention, whereby your consciousness is immersed in a certain aspect of the universe. You are always seperate and connected to everyone, but sometimes we see the differences, and sometimes we see the similarities. It largely depends on the levels of serotonin/ activity of 5-ht responding neurons in various parts of our brain.

This is a central theme to the MDMA experience.

This is the reason why raves exist.  The music keeps going and going, and the music is transferring energy to the crowd via sound which is then returned to the band via dancing.  This exchange goes harder and faster.  Its awe inspiring.  It all leads to a build up and then it hits.  BAM.  Thump thump thump that beat hits the crowd again and the crowd goes ape shit.  Hair hanging in your eyes, the girl next to you on someones shoulders just going fucking crazy.  The person in front next to and behind have their eyes closed dancing just dissolving into ecstasy.  Its that feeling of knowing that everything right.  This is what life is all about.  "that" moment is all i can call it because its beyond words.  MDMA is a gift to the human experience.

Years ago, I was at a winery and saw a piano under a tarp on a small stage. I peeled back the cover to expose a beautiful, black Yamaha grand piano.

I sat down and started noodling. I was mildly inebreiated having had maybe two or three glasses of wine. The mini grass amphitheatre was mostly empty, so I got emboldened and started playing more forcefully and really got into improvising. I got lost in my own world for a bit then looked around to see maybe two dozen people had sat down to listen. I took note of no particular person. After about 40 minutes of jamming, I closed the lid and replaced the tarp and was walking away.

A fine-looking young lady approached me and said something like, "I felt you were playing directly to me." As I was looking away from the audience and had felt nothing from the crowd, it was hard to take her comment as anything more than projection or flirtation.

one time in a friends ride on the freeway he was adjusting the speed of the car and its distance from other cars perfectly. Sometimes when people are driving I feel like they aren't totally aware and it makes me nervous, but everything he did was completely in synch with my brainwaves (I guess) and I felt good and it was a bro moment

That doesn't compare to a tasty glass of refreshing liquid nitrogen.
