Damn Close-Minded Skeptics

*I know this whole topic has been done to death, but it has been a while, and almost everyone appears to have a lot of fun taking sides and getting into a heightened emotional state. (God, humans sure do love to get high. Even tricking their bodies into releasing hormones and chemicals into the blooodstream merely by looking at groupings of black dots on a screen!)*
The most frequent criticism that I (and other "hardcore" skeptics) get here is an accusation about being close-minded. It is ridiculous to think that only a skeptical mind may be closed. A too-believing mind may just as equally well be closed. Yet, one rarely hears believers being called close-minded (I guess skeptics prefer "wacky", but that is a whole 'nother thread...).
To some, close-mindedness seems to mean: "You don't agree with me." As if their point of view is so obviously true that it must be plain to see.
To others, close-mindedness means: "You doubt everything no matter what you are shown; your preconditioning prevents you from seeing the truth."
My defintion (I did not even peek at Webster's this time) is a condensed version of the latter so that it includes both skeptics and believers.
close-minded: inability to come to a rational and objective conclusion when evaluating a subject due to pre-conditioning.
Stay tuned for part II coming shortly (Return ot the Skeptic, The Skeptic Strikes Back).

Alright I can't wait!
Just make sure if you make the prequels don't make them suck. The Phantom Skeptic and Attack of the Skeptics should be equally exciting.

Actually Swami, I think your skepticism is necessary... But say, for example, I say I met some aliens. Having an open mind would be to at least entertain the possibility of me actually meeting alien beings. I'm not asking anyone to believe me, but when someone says "that is impossible, he's just crazy, there is no such thing as aliens" just because they havn't had the same experience, that is closed-mindedness because you limit yourself to the small possibility that maybe what I have experienced is actually true.
My definintion of closed-mindedness: The blind limitation of the possibility that something may exist based on the fact that it can't be "proved". (or something like that)

I'm with Adamist on this.. I do think that your presence is neccessary on this board Swami. Having skeptics around is something that is needed. But there is a difference between being a skeptic that will entertain the notion of something that hasn't been proven, and a skeptic that will not even consider something that hasn't been proven. I enjoy the skeptic mentality of "I don't believe in that, because it has not been proven or I have not experienced it... but I will allow you to share your experiences without attacking your character" .. this allows for an open discussion, where both sides can share what they know/have experienced, in an accepting and open environment. I do not enjoy the skeptic mentality of "This has not been proven, you are an idiot, get your head out of your ass" .. that mentality just causes controversy and back and forth getting nowhere type stuff. Ya know? The latter is my definition of a close-minded skeptic. There can be close-minded believers too.

I enjoy Skeptics, an if'n I wasnt so poor, I'd subscribe to Skeptic Magazine. I define Closed Mindedness as: The inability to beilive in an Ideal/idea because it chalenges your religious/social morals/beliefsystem. Truth/fact have no bearing on your acceptance of said ideal/idea. I.e. Jehovah's Wittness' claim dinosaur bones were 'planted' by Dawinists to 'prove' Evolution. -OoD

>I.e. Jehovah's Wittness' claim dinosaur bones were 'planted' by Dawinists to 'prove' Evolution.
Umm. I'm probably taking a risk just mentioning this but I was raised a JW * and, though I have been out of the church for years, I still occassionally get the perverse urge to defend them **, to wit: yes, many Christian fundamentalist groups believe the whole buried dino bones thing is gospel, but I was never taught that. Granted, I was taught a lot of strange stuff, but never that.
JWs are pretty reasonable when it comes to their particular brand of Creationism - no literal 24 hour days for the "creation process", the Big Bang's a-OK with them, dinos lived a long while ago (during an early creative "day") and so on. Evolution is still right out wrong but ... well, that's my two bits from the blasphemous horses mouth, natch!
You want REAL fundamentalism check out Mr. Jack Chick at www.chick.com! Woo-hoo-hooo!
* please please don't all flood the thread with JW-related questions please! I've been out of that scene for a lo-o-o-ng time - I mean, lookit, I'm posting to a shroomery message board!
** Like, cuz my whole family is still JW and they're good peeps to me so I gotta give props, ai-ight?

... but I agree with your definition Oracle (all the definitions here are good and applicable, actually) and I once ran across a website that advocated dolphin/human sex ... it was like "here's how you pleasure a dolphin" and so on ...
Way off topic. Sorry!

Due to my preconditioning, I cannot, rationally comment on your topic, without coming to an objective conclusion. (Stupid closed minded skeptics)
