The Group Mind At Concerts
    #11311110 -

Is this shit just in my head (meaning I'm probably a borderline paranoid schizophrenic) or is this a real thing?

I was at a show last night and I swear that I was feeding the energy into the band which kept them playing and everyone was in my head...I was stoned as fuck, and on E (which had meth in it I think)...

What do you think?

Higher state of awareness and communication

or Paranoia from social anxiety and meth/pot/E???

I swear that shit was real.

In a way, you are, because how into it you, the audience, is, determines how the band plays, usually.

Hell yeah it was real..

I remember seeing Umphrey's McGee on some crazy mushrooms and kept thinking that they were tapping in to my mind, stealing my thoughts, and sonically playing my thoughts out loud. They are a trip to see. There style is fast, slaying, jammy, spacy, slow, etc. all at once in every song.

But I've also been to a lot of larger festival shows and huge venue shows where the large majority of people are on some sort of psychedelic. All of a sudden the band will switch it up and go from a upbeat funky tune into a sorrowful ballad or something like that and you can literally feel the air in the venue go kind of cold.. The energy dies out and people kind of lull about until the song ends and something picks up the mood..

In my opinion concerts are as much a group collective experience "band and audience together, united as one" as it is an individual or small group (the friends you came with) experience. Really good talented bands realize this observation as well.. Bands that put themselves in there with the crowd are the best to go and see. If the band seems detached from the audience it never feels as good

Music is good stuff

yeah but to what extent?

Robert Anton Wilson talks about the mind being able to convince itself of anything. Was I just convincing myself of something or did other people share the same experience?

Of course, I'm afraid to ask because I don't want anyone to think I'm a paranoid psychotic

Was this just me or is this a common phenomenon

It's common and people have been experiencing transcendent states within the collective mind since the dawn of time.  I'm glad you had that experience!  Sounds great.

Eh. It kind of freaked me out.

I couldn't really relax and I was uptight as fuck. It seemed like everyone could tell and it was kind of humiliating in a way. However, I think that it really pushed me to fuel all my energy into the show and truly pour my soul out.

I certainly became one with everyone around me.

Sadly no one else can give you any credible answers for such a personal experience, and I'd be weary about believing your own.

I'm going to say it has to do with the..

If you have a similar experience when you hadn't already taken drugs, then maybe you'd have something to go off of.

I would say the intersubjective aspect of consciousness is no less primary than individual subjectivity.  An integral part of our being is being-toward-others.  Consciousness is primarily relational, whether that be relation to our environment or to other sentient beings.  In fact, our very identity is largely composed of a complex network of relations.

Years ago, I was at a winery and saw a piano under a tarp on a small stage. I peeled back the cover to expose a beautiful, black Yamaha grand piano.

I sat down and started noodling. I was mildly inebreiated having had maybe two or three glasses of wine. The mini grass amphitheatre was mostly empty, so I got emboldened and started playing more forcefully and really got into improvising. I got lost in my own world for a bit then looked around to see maybe two dozen people had sat down to listen. I took note of no particular person. After about 40 minutes of jamming, I closed the lid and replaced the tarp and was walking away.

A fine-looking young lady approached me and said something like, "I felt you were playing directly to me." As I was looking away from the audience and had felt nothing from the crowd, it was hard to take her comment as anything more than projection or flirtation.

I have no fucking clue what to believe anymore.

Has anyone here ever experienced anything like this before.

Yes, it is all in your head and it is real. I've experienced the collectivity you speak of, to the point where Trey from Phish was actually playing the notes we all anticipated with an unmistakable reaction from the crowd, it was a jam so we couldn't have known what was coming but we did. Also, many stadiums and churches are built on 'ley lines' for the purpose of 'harvesting' this collective emotional energy.

so what exactly is going on with it?

Is everyone reading everyone's mind and then dictating the music based off of the vibes sent out?

It just feels that way when stoned IMO. It's really not like that or you could do it without the drugs and all the time.

The brain is pretty good at working these little tricks. It's a pretty sophisticated machine. More sophisticated then the personality by itself.

So its more along the lines of the mind just picking up on mental vibrations from others and moving in harmony with them (musically and with dance)? As opposed to people verbally entering one another's mental thought processes and ideas?

I'm sort of paranoid that people were reading my mind when it was probably more just more reading vibes?

In this interview with Charlie Rose, Trey mentions he once decided to 'play' his hallucinations and the crowd went wild, as if they were seeing the same thing.
