I think thats B.S.  Solar and wind are both commercially available and being heavily researched by energy companies as well as independent tenured researchers.

Sure, hybrids aren't better now but they are certainly a stepping stone and will very much be a part of the future.

We had electric cars a long time ago, but they all got taken off the market. Now there's more of a demand so they're doing it again. It's not regular science, it's political science.

oil isnt monopolized, there's dozens of oil companies in the US drilling and
refining oil, a monopoly would mean there's only one producer

Maybe so, but technological monopolies are highly susceptible to creative destruction.  It's a much more tenuous position than a resource-based monopoly.

That's why they've figured out how to steal oil from shitty parts of the world i.e. Africa and the Middle East, and pay off the leaders there keeping resource based monopolies rolling.

I'll start worrying about peak oil when our government lets us drill the billions of barrels of oil and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas the US has sitting right here.

if those billions of barrels are actually underground then only a fraction of what is actually down there can be extracted economically.

There is a lot of research into carbon sequestration being done at my university funded by big oil to try and improve the efficiency of wells while making them look like good guys. Carbon sequestration is a horrible idea and solves nothing

Let's face it.  there will always be oil under our feet but whether it is feasible/practical to extract it is another story.

The sooner we change cultural norms and ideas and get off the NEED of oil the better the planet will be.

You can't logically argue against peak oil
it's just a matter of when it's going to peak.

I think that the economy will peak before oil does
who would invest into an oil based infrastructure when oil is running out?

The only feasible way to sustain an urban/industrial society in the future is nuclear power.

Other energy sources like solar, wind, and tidal can contribute, but they cant supply the kind of energy that is needed.

Nuclear energy is clean but uranium is a finite resource too and it wouldn't be long before we hit peak uranium.

Then what?

The only way society can continue is to fundamentally change
we need to return to an agricultural economy, return to living off the land
we need to realize that we don't just live ON the earth, we live WITH the earth

peak oil doesnt mean that oil is running out, it means we're maxed out in
production, there's been a moratorium on building refineries since the 70's
so we cant produce any more than we are, we can drill and cap which is what
we've been doing for decades, we have another 200 years of oil and natural
gas left

They can.  If every house / business had its own solar, wind, geothermal or tidal power system they could all power their selves.

there was a massage therapist where I'm from figured out how to power the county using the tides that flowed through the canals. Harvested the power using big stainless steel turbines. last I knew he was in talks with the county over how to implement it. As soon as the big money stepped in with their lawyers that was the last I'd heard of it. been 3 or more years already.

that would be fine except the world's population is growing exponentially

consumption is increasing and the supply won't be able to meet the demand

there is now way that we have 200 years let of an economy based on burning fossil fuels
