if you think that it would be impossible to power the entirety of the world with just a couple more nuclear power plants, you are uninformed and ignorant.

nuclear is also perhaps the cleanest form of energy we are looking at coming into the 2000 era. no shit. do your homework.

the only thing we are afraid of is that the terrorists will steal the plutoniam and make an atom bomb LOL have @ it. the recent nuclear reacts CANNOT meltdown, and reuse waste stored at yucca mountain. peak oil is what we were worried about 10 years ago, we solved that problem, now we need to figure out what to do about capitalism, the economy etc

I didn't say anything bad about nuclear energy :facepalm: If anything I think we need to switch from coal to nuclear ASAP.

I don't.  Renewables like wind, solar, and geothermal get lots of private investment because they yield high returns.  Nuclear power tends be more favored by central planners.  Nuclear power can't stand stand on its own feet, and requires massive subsidies to get off the ground, which is why it sees very little private investment.  Nuclear already gets subsidized to the tune of $7.1 billion a year, and that's with a very limited number of plants.  Those subsidies would go through the roof if we "switched" to nuclear.

Renewables are getting more and more efficient each year, with wind and geothermal already competitive with coal, and solar catching up quickly.  With the exception of geothermal, they can also be distributed across the grid rather than concentrated in one location.  The real thing that would make it all come together would be developing a smarter grid that distributes electricity more efficiently.  With distributed, renewable micropower and an integrated smart grid, we should be able to replace most of the current coal power plants.  Whatever slack is left from such a grid can be taken up by natural gas until either renewables become efficient enough to overcome the slack or fusion power is developed.

We should all take great comfort in knowing that the rich oil companies have already bought up other technology and sources of energy that compete with petrol so when that runs out, the same rich people can continue selling us crap we're dependent on. All is well!

Nuclear solves the problem of supplying baseline power.  Wind and solar are too variable in their output. Mixed renewable and nuclear energy production is where we should be heading.

Solar for one, wind for another. And those are easily renewable. We have plenty of energy other than petroleum. What pisses me off is we have to use up all of it and fuck up the environment in the meantime. We're forced into this by big companies. Hybrids eat so much fucking gasoline it's hard to say they're progressive.

The variable output problem can be largely solved by the smart grid integration that I mentioned.  If the grid is able to distribute power efficiently, then it can redirect power to areas that need it.  And it's not like there aren't outages under our current system.  If you improve the grid, and distribute power, then you'd have fewer of these outages.  There's always some place where the sun is shining or the wind is blowing.  In any case, if we need a "baseline," as you put it, I'd prefer natural gas over nuclear.  That should buy us at least another 50-100 years to develop alternatives, and doesn't involve having to store toxic waste underground for centuries.

I think thats B.S.  Solar and wind are both commercially available and being heavily researched by energy companies as well as independent tenured researchers.

Sure, hybrids aren't better now but they are certainly a stepping stone and will very much be a part of the future.

The good news about solar and wind is that they can't be monopolized in the way that oil can.  Unless they hold the patent to every kind of solar cell or wind turbine.

Oil companies all have fatty fucking research going on.
Remember when algae was the next big thing? And corn, and soybeans?

I haven't fact checked this but I've heard they actually buy up a lot of solar and wind technologies and just sit on them so nobody else can use them.
