Anatomically distinct dopamine release during anticipation and experience of peak emotion to music * 1
    #13770103 -

Fascinating stuff here. I don't know about y'all, but for me life without music just wouldn't be as good. It's the lubricant of life.

Quote:
Music, an abstract stimulus, can arouse feelings of euphoria and craving, similar to tangible rewards that involve the striatal dopaminergic system. Using the neurochemical specificity of [11C]raclopride positron emission tomography scanning, combined with psychophysiological measures of autonomic nervous system activity, we found endogenous dopamine release in the striatum at peak emotional arousal during music listening. To examine the time course of dopamine release, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging with the same stimuli and listeners, and found a functional dissociation: the caudate was more involved during the anticipation and the nucleus accumbens was more involved during the experience of peak emotional responses to music. These results indicate that intense pleasure in response to music can lead to dopamine release in the striatal system. Notably, the anticipation of an abstract reward can result in dopamine release in an anatomical pathway distinct from that associated with the peak pleasure itself. Our results help to explain why music is of such high value across all human societies.

This doesn't surprise me at all.  When I am listening intently to my favorite tunes there are moments where it feels like every pore on my body pricks up and I get intensely pleasurable rushes all up and down my body.  I think this is how I got into smoking cannabis frequently.. it extended this feeling towards music to be more constant instead of just peaks.

I know exactly what you mean. Gotta love when music gives you rushes of positive energy through your body...

Making music is a similar rush. Even better.

I would say the same thing only more intense and constant for me.  Being a part, no matter how large or small of a successful performance is major :feelsgoodman:.  More addicting than any drug I've touched.

Glad i'm not the only one who feels this way. I get more euphoria from music than X.

I agree with ya Belac, but when you properly mix the two.. holy shit!

Same goes with any drug + music, really.

much better. there can be no more intimate emotional connection than when YOU are the source of music. i love playing more than anything. i often get jittery and sweaty and fucked up-feeling after making intense music
