Republicans push to widen 'war on terror' detention
Mon Nov 15, 9:38 pm ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) – One of President Barack Obama's top critics in the US Congress called for bolstering US powers to detain "war on terrorism" fighters -- including US citizens -- indefinitely and without trial.

"Congress should ensure no court in the land questions the legal authority for our forces to prosecute this war," Republican Representative Buck McKeon, who is likely to become chair of the House Armed Services Committee next year.

McKeon and other top Republicans worry that a measure authorizing military force against those behind the September 11, 2001 terrorist strikes may not be keeping up with the shifting battlefield and enemies in the global conflict.

So they want to reaffirm the original measure and strengthen it, so that it would cover groups like Yemen-based Al-Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which did not exist when the original measure was drafted, and individuals like radical Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaqi, who has US citizenship, aides said.

"We need to reaffirm -- in statute -- the authorization to use military force of 2001," McKeon, who has sponsored legislation to beef up US powers to hold enemy combatants, said in a speech to a foreign policy forum.

The bill declares the US government has the right to detain any unlawful enemy combatant, including a US citizen, "without criminal charges and without trial" for the duration of the conflict, "consistent with the law of war."

Such a proposal would be sure to draw fire from civil liberties advocates and human rights groups who have criticized US detention policies in the "war on terrorism" as overbroad and violating US due process.

Republicans, who take over the House of Representatives when a new Congress convenes in January, hope to hold hearings into various proposals to expand detention powers and solicit input from the Obama administration, aides said.

McKeon has been a leading critic of the Obama administration's stated goals of trying terror suspects in US civilian courts and of shuttering the Guantanamo Bay detention facility for terrorism suspects.

i dont know if thats technically "nazi fascism"..but thats what they call "small" government...

I can call my piss liquid gold, but that doesn't mean that is it actually gold.

Small (federal) government means a (federal) government void of social welfare programs, with minimal regulation, with little taxation, with a strong defensive military, with a small federal police force, that leaves the bulk of governing to the individual states and for the most part stays out of the People's lives.

I pray one day you will see past party lines.

such a state would at the very least facilitate private sector abuse.. which is not by any means a lesser evil to "big government" abuse...

EDIT ..reagan promised to "get the government off the backs of the american ppl" too.. instead..he got the govt on our backs with the war on drugs...what makes you think it will be any different this time??...

The "War on Drugs" vastly predates Reagan and has been continued, in spades, by all 4 succeeding administration.  Not only that but a majority of the people in California said no to marijuana, which isn't even a drug worth taking.

You prove my point.

By the way "nazi" means "national socialist"

Care to explain how socialism = small government?

no wait,  please spare me and don't.  I don't want nightmares tonight.

I've used the same argument, but to be fair, the Nazi party was far from socialist.  Just because they used the term socialism doesn't mean that they followed the tenants of socialism.  Perhaps they would have turned to socialism, eventually, but I doubt it.

Not to mention that this is exactly the opposite of fascism, forced taxation aside. Obamas policy decisions however..........

the difference is large, as you say, but the aims and philosophies seem strikingly similar:  the individual has no inherent value or rights and is only worth considering to the extent he is of utility to the collective.

Bingo.  The facism=conservative, socialism=liberal dichotomy has many problems, and this is one of the larger ones.  A conservatism which favors small govenrment power is percisely that which both opposes national socialism and corpratism and advocates a government which does not have the power to institute such agendas even in the case circumstances bring a fascist to power.

While claiming conservatism as a whole is dichotomous with fascism is probably a no true scotsman fallacy, to the extent someone understands conservativism to be for limited government, truely, then this observation seems very true.

Its worth recalling that the great abuses of power in history were all perpetuated by those who had a government so strong it could not be resisted internally by political or other means.  Now if only we could get the US to stop veering the wrong way and start starving it of the wealth and data which allow it to progress towards more totalitarian ends given the political will.

I think that the root of the confusion you were experiencing may have to do with the fact that Republicans for many years have not been fiscally conservative or even remotely "small government orientated".

There has not been much difference between Democrats and Republicans.

Many Republicans who were elected recently claim to be interested in cutting government across the board.

I think that would be an excellent start to allowing the economy to recover from the madness of central economic planning.

If you are interested in a historical example of how such a plan works recall President Harding ending a depression in one year by cutting government spending in half (circa 1920).  Contrast that with the idiocy that Hoover and F.D.R. engaged in that tortured the American economy for over a decade and you may begin to understand where folk like myself are coming from.

Can you dig it?

A decade?  We are still paying for the BS started by FDR.

Chronically unemployed?  First I'm gonna ask "Why are you chronically unemployed?"  Then when they say "I don't want to work", I'm going to shoot them and feed them to the elderly and disabled.

There were ample mechanisms to care for the elderly and disabled but the leftist politicians stole the soc sec payments and ran through them like a streaker in Mecca.

People often consider government to be the only "benefactor" for the poor, elderly, and disabled.  Fact is government does not give of it's own resources because it rightfully owns nothing.

If it were not expected for government to support those with no means perhaps individuals would simply take care of family and friends who are S.O.L.

whatever they may claim.. military and prisons are never on the cutting board...the repugs simply mean to transfer any cuts to infrastructure and social programmes to military and prisons...

more specifically..when they talk about "small government"..they mean limiting govt to the role of a hit squad.. which is not the same thing as reducing its overall size...

Ron Paul was talking about bringing all the troops home A.S.A.P.

The current administration has no intention of doing that.

Foreign policy hasn't really changed since Bush left office.

Paul talks about a noninterventionalist foreign policy...  Isn't that the complete opposite of Blitzkrieg?

What I am trying to show you is that your insistence that Teaparty = Nazi Fascism makes no sense whatsoever...

Do you have a rational argument to the contrary?
