Thanks for all the compliments.  Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.

Actually, I was on a two fold mission when I found these.

1.  To gather seeds for a friend.


And to look for a rare green staining Pholiota that I am sure is active.




This mushroom showed up once, in 2008, and hasn't been back since.  I go there every year hoping and looking but have found nothing.  :sad:  It's one of those damn cold-loving mushrooms that shows up during the autumn rains.

Unfortunately I don't have anymore pics worth posting for now.  I was all over the friscosa taking shots from different angles.

It isn't growing from a log though.  It is growing at the base of a living Hemlock tree.  I'll try to get some more shots the next time I go there.

How cold was it?  I'm glad you asked.


The reason I was a little ho hum about these in the original post is that I was looking for something better.  Damn that green Pholiota anyway.  :sad:

Oh, and Ohio isn't boring at all.  Aside from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame AND the Football Hall of Fame we have mushrooms you can pick without worrying about competition.  That's exciting enough for me. :wink:  Daniel Stuntz, for whom Psilocybe stuntzii was named, and Paul Stamets are Ohioans.  I'd take Ohio and Pennsylvania over most states.  Obviously, I live here. :grin:

I too have a couple times found a greenish staining pholiota - but man i don't think id wanna guinee pig em myself:eek: - sometimes ive found them growing RIGHT by my classic g.luteus logs too - only reall way to see the differences is to look closely at the stems and gills - but the greenish staining always gets me excited too!!! NICE FINDS NICE THREAD!!!!!!:bow2:
Hopefully you can find the green pholiota sooner than later!

Nice find on those fiscosas!:handth: They must've rode in on that cool ocean breeze you have there in Ohio.:wink:

Some Pholiotas stain green like P.spumosa, and some Pholiotas start out blue/green before turning a more normal cinnamon color, like P. subcaerulea. Never heard of an active Pholiota but then again the edibility on most of them is listed as "unknown", so I don't think many, if any have experimented. Interesting. I'd like to see some more shots, if you would be so kind, Mr. M.:salute:

Thanks Bob.  I do a lot of work with spore prints people send me taking micrographs of them.  I am sure I have spread more than one species into my area.

Where did you get the information on the Pholiotas?  I might be able to ID mine from some photographs.

I wonder how difficult it would be to start an outdoor patch of these in SW Ohio?  I'm gonna be trying to start a Psilocybe azurenscens patch now that a certain someone sent me a print.  I'd love to attempt to grow these as well.

Mr Mushrooms. is that japanese knotweed seeds that youre gathering for a friend? its a scary invasive. very medicinal (specifically with lymes) and apparently loves to protect actives.. but people are spraying alot of herbicides because of it. id be nervous to spread it because it really crowds out non natives. wondering your perspective on that sort of thing.

Probably not too difficult - Wiskokid has been very successful in Wisconsin. Look up his threads on the matter.

Yes, those are Polygonum cuspidatum aka Japanese Knotweed.  As a person who regularly practices maintenance on my wild areas by destroying invasives I can say that isn't an easy question to answer.  The root of the problem, however, is found in metaphysics rather than ethics in philosophy.  Is man a part of nature or does he stand outside/above nature?  Most naturalists, and especially botanists, tend to think man is a product of evolution, that is, just another part of nature.  If that is the case then whatever man does is just as natural as what the plants themselves do.  If that is the case I am merely part of nature promoting that which is important to me, i.e. the proliferation of active mushroom species.  If, in fact, man is something more than nature and actually stands above it, man might be ethically responsible for his actions.
