Thinking without words - Serious matter * 2
    #12427132 -

I've been diagnosed as autistic, I dunno which preceded which but I never talk inside my head unless I wanna see what it sounds like. I thought this was the case for everyone but I was watching True Blood one day and was laughing at how whenever the psychic girl read someones mind she'd hear them talking in their heads then my friend tells me he thinks like that. Since then I've found out LOADS of people actually think with words. This is some fucked up shit on many levels. 1.) If you think in words you can only think about that which you have words for and all sorts of problems will stem from that. 2.) Sometimes things sound crazy or bad when in reality they're not. This paves the way for mind control because the media attaches morals to words. The most obvious example is the word drugs. 3.) Words take a very long time to sound out so this would severely slow down the thoughts who used them to think. How many of you here use words when you're thinking? Honestly if you now that you're aware of it stop doing it and you'll see how insanely superior thinking with your 5 senses is.

First off nobody thinks in words our thoughts are something we use to make pictures, sounds, smells, emotions etc. inside our own heads so people thinking that they think in words is an indication that they've been wording out their thoughts for so long they started believing that they need the words to think. We can use any of our 5 senses to analyze and form new concepts but it can be done and we could make a taste based language if we wanted to. Tactile senses would be more difficult than taste and smell. Taste and smell would be more difficult than emotions which in turn would be more difficult than sound and sound in turn is more difficult to think with than pictures. Pictures are the most effective it seems.

Wow, they diagnosed you as autistic?

Do you have problems communicating with others in real life? It seems like you have a strong command of the English language and are effective at communicating your ideas through words, even if you don't think in them.

Personally, I think in images as much as I think in words. For example, when I let a memory play out in my head, there are no words, only the running of the movie real. When I sit in lecture and listen to my professors, my mind is quiet and I try to intuitively understand what my professor is saying without analyzing it with my own words, but rather I try to visualize the concept. Even when I am just walking down the side walk, I typically am not thinking in words,  but I am taking in the sights and sounds with my senses.

The use of words for thinking, for me, usually occurs when I need to communicate an idea to another...or if I am trying to conceive how I would communicate it to another.

But I agree, there is an inherent limitation in any verbal or symbolic language, in the sense that a word is a definite object attempting to pin down an abstract concept in your head. The words are not the thoughts, and the thoughts are not the words.

Also, excellent first post my friend. :super:

I think like that too, I  find it strange that somebody can think all the time with words, I only think with words if I'm trying to word something out, confused about something or revising a plan in my head but generally also do it with images. But i never found it strange when watched a series or something and the characters thought in words.
I'm gonna take an online test for autism now.

I once read that if you learn a second language from a young age it encourages you to think in images and not in words.

This is incredibly interesting, I would put to you that number 2 has the potential to be both a positive and a negative, whereas there is the potential for negative mind control as you said, there is also the potential for language to be used to positively effect ones brain, and that is by creating a phantom reality which the brain perceives as "real" reality in doing this, it is possible for the mind to physically influence the brain and create whatever good feelings it wishes.

That makes sense. If you are learning two different ways to express yourself, it would make sense that it would force you to first form a conceptual image of what you want to describe, and then choose the mode in which you want to describe it.

Nice. I like it. :super:

If you've been diagnosed as autistic you must have some social inabilities, or saw a quack.

I think in words all the time. In fact I have conversations with myself from time to time, but this doesn't restrict me from imagining stimuli.

thinking is whatever is happening on the mind stage, is it not?

sudden waves of body feeling
the composition of these words
sounds from the cars outside and the whistle in my ear
the cool air falling in my nose and the warm air falling out
tea in a cup.

no one single thought is better than all the rest, from a passive observational standpoint.

It's not surprising that you were diagnosed with autism. Most people who are are just social failures (don't worry; I'm an extreme social failure if there ever was one)
Doctors find it easier for everyone if they just give them a diagnosis and a prescription instead of having to explain to their parents that they sucked at making their kid some one who could be around other people with out looking/feeling like a lame-o

but hey, no one did either with my parents/me... I had to figure it out on my own

Anyways....

Having awareness, but no true sense of self
You find yourself enslaved in chains of earthly wealth
The unending chatter that plagues the mind;
Confusion will be all that you find

Chaos reigns in the untamed mind.

You must quench the yearning and false desire
Only balance will elevate us higher

You must train the body and the mind to serve
Envisioning thoughts with out words

Chaos reigns in the untamed mind.

It is a 3dimensional projection  of billions of separate processes , going on, at any moment.

FROM MOMENT TO MOMENT , each of us receives , a steady flow of information that enters through the five senses, gets processed by the mind and is eventually converted
into
the
BODY.

I think in thoughts.

Sometimes that's words, other times images. Still other times it's things that are neither words nor images and that I can't describe.

2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.
