Consciousness is like a brick wall.

Imagine yourself as a bricklayer building a wall, we'll call the wall your self-concept.  You begin at the bottom of the wall, placing the important foundational bricks that will support the whole thing. Your first attempts might fail because of improperly laid foundational bricks, which lead to a weak wall which easily crumbles under pressure.  After some training in brick laying (or in your consciousness's case, philosophy) you begin to know how to properly place the right bricks in the right places.  Your wall gets big and strong.  Most people keep building their wall well into their middle ages.  As the wall grows, the foundational bricks are lost in the distance, but the new bricks placed by you equally rely on these first bricks, or else there could be no wall standing at all.

Eventually, the brick wall reaches such a height that the bricks themselves can't support the weight of the massive wall (self-concept).  As a result, the support fails, and the whole thing comes crashing down as the builder puts one too many bricks on the top.  For a real wall a person pushing might do the trick, and the self-concept is similarly weak.  The right question can be like a wrecking ball, blowing a huge hole in a wall someone has spent their whole life creating.

Now, once the wall is broken, the builder has two choices.  Build the wall again, with stronger materials, which are equally as temporary, impermanent, as the bricks, but might last longer.  Or, the builder can retire, and spend the rest of their days without building walls.  Or even, rather than building walls for their use, the now liberated builder can build walls for fun.

Why?  self-supported goals perhaps.  That goes for whether or not our will is free.  Even if our thoughts are totally deterministic, our goals, in this self supporting system, are equally self supported, though not by our "self"

I like to think this world, as it stands now, leaves a place for people like dick cheney, and people like the dalai llama.  Both are equally dogmatic about their goals, and totally equal, but appear to be (though really aren't) "on different ends of the spectrum"

At some point we might outgrow this need for dueling forces.

things can be so arbitrary and virtual
they can be connected so as to become more firm (less insubstantial)
and then a wrecking ball swings into that firmness and the arbitrary structure shatters.
