Not sure I believe this really. Although based upon my experience it can be somewhat scary to see your ego dissolve away.

A bunch of whiney pampered bitches, who can't or don't want to handle what's in their own head. They should thank their lucky stars that they meditated rather than dropping acid or eating some shroomies. How do you think they would react if they did?

I think the one teacher they tried to discredit said it best

"Negative side effects from meditation? There really are none. Meditation is just about going within, toward what is real. There is nothing 'created' through meditation. We create our problems and negative side effects more by escaping into the world, escaping from meditation. Meditation is a long-overdue look within. Sometimes a student will discuss their initial fear of the inner void once the space and depth of being is first encountered, or that they feel like they are going crazy. I simply tell them, 'Meditation is not making you crazy. It is making you aware that you are already crazy.'"

which makes more sense,
that a technique used by thousands of people of thousands of years never showed any negative side effects until the last few years, or some people engaged in something without fully understanding it? Considering the location, it makes more sense that some people are looking to blame others for their problems and are missing the point of meditation..which seems to say that in all that time they never actually entered a meditative state.

I hadn't considered this before, but when I think about it, it's not that surprising. I don't think it's a case of people being "unable to handle their own minds", or anything like that. Some people's brain chemistry is different, and they may be a little more susceptable to psychosis, hallucinations, and other psychological problems. Some people who use psychedelics, even responsibly, will have very similar negative effects. The origin of these problems is likely the same.

Meditation is a real path towards enlightenment. Drugs are illusions if you try to use them to enlighten yourself. I think that those voices was her soul communicating with her body and mind. She was communicating with her self, and it was scaring her. Fear is what happens when we enter the world of the unknown. Once the unknown becomes known, we don't need to fear it.
