Re: Grains with out a PC [Re: snowboarder3]

I tried this for my ATL#7 grow. No PC whatsoever. Just standard rye berry preparation, 90 minutes in a pot, very little steam escaping.

Results:

Out of 7 jars, only one is contam'ed with a very yucky looking bacterial infection. It's destined to the inferno. The other 6 jars are nearly a month in, have excellent stone production, and not showing a single sign of contamination.

However, let it be known that this was extraordinary luck, for I did not use the fractional tek.

Sorry if this is too late ha ha.

I haven't ever used a pressure cooker due to lack of availability, my advice would be, soak for 24 hours, wash/rinse till you have clear water, boil for half an hour, wash/rinse as before until the water is clear, dry slightly and then load the jars up, i use a large crock part and try to keep my 1 pint WBS jars at least 1/3 submerged in water and boil for 90 minutes, ensuring that the water doesn't go down.

I know its not a perfect method, but it had worked consistently for me, i have not had a single sour or contaminated jar since i started this way...

My advice, don't use fractional tek, too much fuss, just give them the sustained heat they need and ensure that they have a little more than the necessary water when you put them in to sterilise.

I'm not sure about the time you should shake, maybe early, maybe later, I'm not sure what would give the myc the most chance of eating any Bax buildup in there. 2 jars from the last 5 grain runs have stalled a little, only to catch up with their brothers and have a perfectly healthy mycellium smell when opened for use.

I somehow feel that i will be harpooned for admitting to such a technique, hey works for me... spawned to bulk with very few problems indeed.

IMO Fractional Sterilization is your best bet. Steam once, incubate overnight, steam again, incubate again overnight, steam once more, innoc. Supposedly allows the bacterial spores to germinate and then kills the germinated spores which are much more prone to heat than non germinated.
http://www.shroomery.org/5248/What-is-fractional-sterilization-or-tyndallization

I have used various forms of fractional sterilization with a lot of success, I recently discovered a drawer full of jars I had forgotten about years ago and none have contams, all FS'd. However I would not follow the guidelines in that link, that is straight out of a textbook, the times are far too short for my liking, the same textbooks probably say 20mins at 15psi is enough, but very few use it.

It is people following textbook FS techniques that give it a bad name. Just like idiots microwaving grains for 5mins give microwaving a bad name.

If I was to have a more foolproof method I would wash & rinse grain thoroughly, soak for 24-36hrs. Then follow RR's grain treatment then load jars and steam for 60mins. Incubate 24hrs steam 90mins, do this 3 times. Then steam 90-120mins on the last day. So it has undergone 5 heating cycles.

This is probably overkill but I expect people will still insist on shortcuts and doing things halfassed. I have soaked grain for a full week before and microwaved for ~25mins and fruited on that grain. If you understand the concept of fractional sterilization there are lots of different things to try. Microwave FS works very well for me, a TEK is hard to write as it would vary from microwave to microwave and also on the amounts of grain used. Calculations are essential to determine your moisture content.

I read a tek posted on another forum a few years ago...

Steps were similar to the above post.

Just by memory...
The tek used popcorn.
The jars were prepared as usual.
They were steamed over 3 consecutive days for 90 minutes.
Allowing 24 hours (no longer) for germination of endos between each steam.

The success rate was 100%
Meaning...
Zero contams & full conolization.

The tek/experiment was quite thorough.

edit...
Forgot to wish you luck!

Seriously, rye and wbs need to be PC'd, especially wbs cuz it is very dirty. you have nearly no chance of success without a PC following a standard tek. However you can rinse your wbs with soap with salycilic acid  and I put a lot of soap in the water and mix well and let it sit for 2 days. I know it sounds like it will over saturate it but it will still grow. then wash it til the water is clean and the steam sterilize if for a few hours. Don't use jars bigger than 1/2 pint either or you'll never kill the stuff in the center. That IMO is your best shot. I did a no PC wbs and soap tek that I had seen done elsewhere and had limited success. You need to leave the wbs kinda sudsy so after I rinsed it I added more soap to the clean water...it didn't stop the myc but you can't use soap with triclosan cuz it's an antifungal...It's worth spending $30 on a used PC on ebay cuz you will spend that in wasted supplies without blinking and waste a month or 2 only to fail? Why bother, just do it right....even if you gotta start with a crappy walmart PC.

ok grains are done and cool
i decided to do 2 90 minuet steam sessions
some of the grains burst but not too many
i will be adding the agar chunks in a few
im going to add 3-4 chunks to try and speed up colonization
here goes nuthin

Wouldn't worry about burst grains. Some of the quicker jars I've had colonize were 100% busted grains.

I've never used a pressure cooker or jars.I use tupperware too,and I never get contams.I let my wbs soak overnight, boil for 10 minutes, strain, load into tupperware, nuke for three minutes, let cool for an hour, then inoculate. After three days I get myc. It's just that easy. Here is what I always end up with. Now if I could just get bigger fruits:grin:

Awesome. This is a great experiment to undertake, grains without a pc, wow. I love to see the myc growing, I hope it all works out, if so, you better believe I'm going to reference this thread for my future grows.

This probably goes without saying, but I think it at least deserves a cursory mention for new (PC less) cultivators that may read this thread:

Make sure your kitchen is extremely clean. Clean every surface with a disinfectant, use oust in the air, and make sure you don't have any drafts from possibly contaminated areas of your house. It just takes a few trich spores to throw all your work away.

Anyhow, good luck with your WBS! It looks great so far, I hope it holds out!

i am by no means advising people to use this as their primary
way of sterilizing grains this is just a little experiment i decided to do
i like to fiddle around with different things
some other members here can vouch for me on that
colored agar, the bread experiment, oysters on fabric scraps

i like to see how far i can stretch my creativity
im going to do oysters on a mix of horse poo, fabric, wood chips, and coffee here soon

like i said i just like to have fun sometimes i fail
other times i win but i always gain knowledge from it:thumbup:
