Whats the best grain as far as contam resistance?

Birdseed hasnt been working for the guy I heard of, he keeps having contamination problems. He is very sterile, and not sure what is going wrong. He heard birdseed is very prone to contam, is this true?


He was thinking of trying Rye Berries....

Fuck the pf tek, its for simple minds. I think popcorn is the best, as it colonizes the fastest, and can hold the most water. Ive never had a single contamn with popcorn, I even pc'ed at 5 psi for an hour, and got no contamns. Go with popcorn, its the best

speaking of comtams, one of my jar is camtam and would it still fruit, this is just an experiment for the terium I just built. I just wanted to see it it would work, but if i put the comtam jar in my tertuim would it effect the jar that not comtamed.

Are you PCing it? My friend has had success with PF jars and popcorn alike. Not a single contamed jar yet. That seem to be the easy part for him. Keeping the contams away afterwards hasn't been as easy. Only ones he has had were on tired old cakes in a dirty terrarium though. Anyway, try some popcorn out. It is fucking EASY. If you follow the tek it seems like a no brainer almost. If you have not done any PF jars yet, do some of those first if you want cakes.

Contamination tendencies will vary person to person, grain to grain. Myself, I've never gotten rye to work for whatever reason. Once I found something that did work [BS] I stuck with it. A buddy of mine found that straight sunflower seeds work wonderfully [for him]. Wierdo!
On your next batch, try a few different grains. Based on the performances you can judge what works for YOU and stick with it.

once again popcorn is the shit and it's easy as hell.never had a jar contam with popcorn.just had my first jar contam using WBS only one out of six.not bad!

I use to use wbs. I'm using popcorn now and I think I'll be sticking with it.

If your having problems with contams in the wbs it is possible the problem is with the preparation of the grain and not the grain itself. The reason I like popcorn is that it is easy to strain (no small grains falling through strainer) and its all the same grain. No small grains too wet or big grains too dry. The consistency is the same throughout. Also, the jars shake very easily, and no need to shake while still hot. Plus, its easy to get access to all the time.

Heres how I do it. Boil your popcorn till you can smash the kernels with your fingers. Then, while its still hot I strain for a few minutes then pour it on to a double folded sheet and roll it around till the outside of the grain is dry (this takes only a few minutes because the hot kernels dry very quickly). Then load into jars and p.c as normal. Don't worry if your popc looks dry afterwards. The outside should look dry but there is definetly moisture inside the grain if you could smash it with fingers. You should get germination in a week if your using multi-spore injection. I also use a 1/4in hole filled with polyfil on the lid and inject directly through that, while flame sterililing needle between jars.

I have to go with Resin and everyone else on this. popcorn is a much better spaw and it virtually never contaminates. Keep up the good work.

in terms of your WBS, what method did you use to prepare it? also does your WBS have sunflower seeds in it? I have found that the sunflower seeds tend be the source of the contams.

I did soak the WBS both times for 12 hours prior to PCing in the jars for 1 hour at 15psi.


Both times I got the SAME TYPE of contam. It was a yellowish/orangish growth.


Yes, the WBS had sunflower seeds in it.

yeah and also when you have time or wanna give it the effort try the wbs without sunflower seeds, worked a lot a lot a lot a lot a lot better for my cat this way.

i am trying popcorn i had good growth then it slowed and isn't doing much at all now could my corn be dry?

Yes, it could be dry. Do you have adequate air exchange? IM(Friend's)E if the mycelium is not thoroughly spread out by shaking and the jar reaches a certain age, the mycelium won't colonize further.

i think i have good air exchange i have tin foil over the tops with 6 or so holes and more foil over that which isnt to tight i guess if nothing else happens ill have to start over trying something else

How long to you boil the popcorn? So you could follow the PF Tek, but instead of using verm and water, just use straight popcorn kernels?

ok i opened a jar and took out some corn it was moist about the same as when i put it in the jar i do think i didnt boil it enough it is some what hardish out side but wet inside nothing like thrice said above it is not soft at all .. so should i abort and start over and can i just reboil my popcorn and reuse it or would that be a bad idea?
