Preparing grain without a pressure cooker
    #1325213 - 02/21/03 06:19 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

is it possible to first prepare grain via simmering ala annos grain tek (bottom of the page), then load this into jars and steam sterilize? i am under the impression that the PC is necessary to insure the proper water content of the grain, but not imperative for sterilization.

its not needed for water content its needed for sterilazation.

Pasturization is what you do with a PC isn't it?

Pressure is created when using a pressure cooker. Pressure which kills. Contams that are inside the grain. That are heat resistant.

Pasturization is different. Heat and steam/water. Great for shit & straw. Negative on grain

the pressure cooker allows the material you're trying to sterilize to reach a temp. that is higher than the temp. of boiling water. If you're only steaming your jars you're only getting them as hot as boiling water, which isn't enough to always kill everything. If you're trying to do grains without a PC, fractional sterilization may be feasible. This means that you steam for an hour, then the next day steam for an hour again, then the next day steam for an hour again. If you start doing that, however, you'll soon realize how much easier and more worth it it is to have a pressure cooker.

you gotta use a pressure cooker on grain because it gets the temp up around 250 degrees F. this is important because grain isn't quite as fluffy, airy, and penetrable as PF substrate and harbors larger numbers and greater varieties of molds and bacterias. it's gotta be pressure cooked for an hour to kill that shit. yeah... you'll have to ask anno about that tek business.

The pressure doesn't kill anything.
If what you say would be true, then 30 feet under water(where the pressure is the same as in the PC), there would be no life.

On pressure cooking and sterilisation and fractional sterilisation read http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/3318 .

Maybe my friend has been lucky but the method I have seen him use on birdseed has given him contam free results through two bags of birdseed without a pressure cooker. It is simple and I have posted it before. Birdseed also requires a pressure cooker so they say. Like I said, maybe he has been lucky. But he has gotten incredible results with it. Incredible!

It's not the pressure. It's the temp of the steam vapor at the pressure.(15 psi=250 F~121.111 C)Some endospore forming bacteria can survive long periods of sterilization.I simmer grains;drain, load and let sit 24 hrs. Then PC an hour.Semi sterile surroundings produce a very low rate of contams<10%.
