Only if you mispronounce it...  It is always hilarious when someone refers to Clit-oh-sigh-b in a group.  I usually take them aside and explain that the acceptable pronunciation is Cl-eye-toss-uh-bee.  Ehehehe.

I think most hunter will agree and say that as long as you get the point across and dont butcher the word to bad its ok.

I agree with Kuo on this one.

Although I do pronounce psilocybe correctly so I guess that makes me the fool to someone who cares.:tongue:

But it would be helpful for some of the more experienced hunters (CureCat, Alan, Senor Hongos etc) to maybe try to make a page about pronunciation of latin names for this site.

I know it would take a good deal of time to complete, but would be very helpful for many that are interested in learning more, you can hear Paul stamets say a genus name one way, then hear Tom volk say it another way then read this page by Kuo and it can be rather confusing.

The one I have always been curious about pronouncing is semilanceata.

Sem-Ee-lants-otta? I have never heard the word spoken by anyone other than my friends and I...

:grin: Thanks for clearing that up.  I have to admit it.  Pronouncing any cybe as if it spins off the Silosibe pronunciation of cubes bugs me.  I don't correct anyone, but it grates nonetheless.

I did create a thread about pronunciation but it never "stuck."  I never wanted that in the first place.  All I wanted was the thread linked in Gumby's sticky.  hint hint :wink:

For the record let me state I don't like Lepissta nuda.  Sounds to much like water sports for me.  And don't tell me you know anything about that, please.  :grin:

My old teacher suggesting I would fudge a photo?  I'm shocked and deeply hurt.  :sad:

A few of you guys guessed it.  Yes, the photo isn't accurate.  WarriorSoul came the closest to putting a finger on it.  When I was taking the photo I messed around with the white balance and saw what it looked like under incandescent lighting.  It was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

I feel a little like an ass.  Please don't hate me.

Here is the "real" photo under natural light.  I still think it is impressive.

Yeah... everything in the photo had a blue filter on it.  I have never seen a blue Blewit.

You guys can pronounce whatever, however you want to.  I'm not a nazi with the pronunciation of species names, seeing as I am not well versed in the area of latin pronunciation, and everyone I have ever met who does know a thing or two, never agrees or applies the same rules as the next person. 

However, in the case of Clitocybe, I simply do the favour of informing the (generally new) person of why everyone had a funny smirk when they pronounced the name...

Other than that, it really doesn't matter as long as both parties understand what is being discussed.

Oh, and there was one time I went hunting with a Shroomerite and his friend and both of them kept referring to "sigh-low-sybe sigh-uh-knEEE-senz" and I had to explain why I kept busting out laughing.  It just sounded so funny, I couldn't help it.

I'm not a Nazi either which is exactly why I don't correct anyone on anything.  I hear people butcher the English language as a matter of course.  Most of the time it has nothing to do with mushrooms.  Having said that, our experiences are not parallel.  Most people I know use the same pronunciations with regard to botanical Latin, including mushrooms, with few exceptions.  Regardless of what some of the "experts" choose to think there are correct pronunciations to botanical Latin.  The rules are fairly easy to learn and straight forward.  There are even books on the subject.  It's Latin, not Martian. I took my courses in high school.

I took it upon myself to learn how to correctly pronunciate mushrooms after being told by a friendly fellow hunter how to say the words. I was given tips that the vowels are just as they sound and that there are no silent letters.
