Do weilii ever develop a veil on their stem? I found some that look much like weilii but they have a black veil on their stem. Ive never seen this before so I thought I would ask before I threw them away.

And the plural should sound like "wile eyes"
I usually just pronounce it "way lays"

I found a total of four weilli this weekend around Alphretta/Roswell area. Me and my GF searched Cobb, Fulton, and Forsyth and Cherokee counties on Saturday and Sunday. Here are some habitat quirks that I noticed, although with a total of only four mushrooms these are generalizations. -The grass was really really thick. -The grass was uniform from property to property. -The caps barely poked above the grass. -The neighborhoods had cookie cutter housing -The trees were no taller than 10 feet. -The mushrooms were downslope from a pine mulch bed. That's all I can remember. Have fun picking. I want to go back to GA before the season is over! -On Edit: Avoid Fort Yargo if you value your money, $20 for a tent site is a rip-off! But the 1/2 of chanterelles that we found neighboring our site was cool. And another 4-5 lobster mushrooms around the campground.

>The mushrooms were downslope from a pine mulch bed. -The first ones that 2Experimental and I found were on a slope 2 feet from a bed of pine straw. But it was growing in grass. Another set was found under pine trees, in the grass. And another set was found in pine mulch. I don't understand the affinity of these mushrooms to pine trees , but there does indeed seem to be a connection. Then again, it might just be that where you find a weilli, you can find a pine tree close by. Georgia really does have alot of them. They are subtle. And they seem to prefer shaded areas. Common landscapes for homes include shrubbery that is located very close to the house and that the first 2/3rds of the front yard (or so) be just grass... a tract that can be easily mowed. Although 2X encouraged car driving with occasional stops to explore promising spots on foot, I thought walking around would be better that driving even though it would take up longer... it would be more thorough. Our first succesful weilli hunt was also the first time we tackled a whole neighborhood on foot. A jogger had informed us that the neighborhood was 8 years old, and that bolstered both of our hopes. 2X found a small patch in 5-10 minutes time, and I believe this was due to his walking habits. While I walked on the pavement scanning the interior of the yard, and only occasionally stepping into it, 2X was walking deeply into the yard. The next time, I plan on using his method... even though it attracts much more attention, it's seemingly worth it. -Find where weilli like to be. We all know to go looking for mushrooms a few days after a heavy rain. Targeting it's habitat is just as important. -In nieghborhoods, don't walk the street but rather get into the yards. Walk the tract of grass and look around and into the shrubbery and mulches close to the house. Even the shadow of the house is shade. -Backyards are often not kept as well as the front. They may have more, and taller, trees.

No, they don't have any veil remnants.
After talking to someone who is well versed with mushroom names and latin, I understand the correct pronunciation to be:
"why-lee-eye"
...but I just call them wilys.

It says on line that weillis can be found in bermuda grass as well as in loblolly pine needles. this is why you find them near pine trees, it has to do with a food source for the mycelium but im just speculating. ive grown alot of indoor fungus and they feed off of brown rice so im thinking its kinda the same process. by the way my pics turned out fantastic i should have them up soon....

i was just wondering, ive heard people on here say they have patches with thousands of weilli's. Yet i have seen like 2 real pics from people that have posted with only 5 to 30 mushrooms so wheres the proof. just hard to believe unless its a golf course or something that there are that many in just one patch. not calling you a liar whoever you might be just would love to see some evidence of that many growing togather. the most i have found in 1 patch is 40.

I think that if you are just starting your hunting that you should walk all neighborhoods by foot. It may seem like a daunting task but you can make SOME assumptions before stepping out of the car. Active construction and large numbers of homes for sale are good signs that the neighborhood is too young and should be avoided. Sidewalks are also good qualitative marker of a neighborhood. Extremely worn curbs or sloped curbs are a good sign that the neighborhood is too old. Sidewalks that are 5-10 years old will look practically new. You can read a lot about proper habitat but IMHO you will not be able to visually confirm the habitat until you get to explore it first hand.
BTW, while we were walking around we got to wondering how well known is Weil's Psilocybe? LK was saying that its presense is beginning to be known amongst the shroomer community. Have there been any news reports or anything of the like?

I have a feeling some more lawns in that hood will produce after Ivan... at least we know the Weilii spores are out and about in the area now since mushrooms were left behind..
Yidaki- where in alpharetta/roswell did you find them? that is 3 reports from alpharetta this year...! both other reports were around the highway 9/winward parkway iarea( give or take 15 miles).... I think we got a wave of spores or something, I was worried I would have to drive to cobb to find them.
I'm glad we cleared up the name... Waylay was ingrained , but I will try to start saying : while ee eye

By shear luck, I saw my first Weilii today. I told a friend of mine about them on Saturday night, and showed him some pics off of this message board. He is a landscaper so I thought he might run across some. Damned if he hadn't already called me by 9:00 this morning, only 20 minutes after ariving at his first job site. He is one lucky SOB. Anyway, he found them in a nice residential neihborhood growing from bermuda sod. The area is always under sprinklers, so hopefully these things will just keep growing from the same spot over and over, who knows? He goes there every monday to do the landscaping, so hopefully monday will be a good day this fall. They were found just north of I-285, south of where everyone else seems to find them, Fulton county actually. Anyway, there were about 30 of them yeilding about 200 grams wet. I guess I might actually have to get off my ass and look for them myself next time. And a few Pan Subbs as well, below

Read the other day that it wasnt the hurricane that brought the spores here, they were already here. the rain from hurricane opal just revived the fungus and they grew more abundantly after that. A lady was actually the one that found them and they named them after dr. weil. they were found just a few days after the rain stopped so there isnt anyway they were brought here. I know someone has already typed this info on here but i dont think everyone knows this... keep on hunting

I picked a fresh batch of about 20 to 25 this morning in my shade patch. its surrounded on three sides and the only patch that is still producing new caps, the other patches have a few but have dried out too much. so advice, look in lots of shady spots because they will grow for longer in those conditions. just have to wait till it rains again to go to the other patches... ps please inform people on proper edicate in the patch, dont pick all of them and try not to walk through it. we got to preserve these spots so they will spread and multiply...
