Perhaps if they taste enlightenment while in thier presence or through their words?

The company of the Sage can give the strength of mind to the disciple, through the sheer strength of mind of the Sage & the power of his meditation, the energy of the Sage is like a black hole that is feeding, those in close proxomity will feel his presence, even if unconsciously they will be affected & eventually drawn inwards to realize the Self

I'd be interested if there was a shred of evidence for it.

Doood I've known several people who followed one guru or another and later in life they all agreed they were young, ignorant and didn't have a clue.

Of course this will happen, but there are true teachers & false teachers

The existence of false teachers does not discredit the existence of the true ones

Beings will naturally go where they find happiness & peace
Only that happiness & peace is the Guru, whatever form it takes...

so if i really enjoy fishing and find it peaceful then that's my guru?

Why can't it just be fishing?

Oh and how do you tell the real guru from the fake one. I've known people who said that being in the presense of their guru was a truly enlightening experience and then years later they said they were just young and inexperienced.

I don't think an unenlightened person would be able to know, without doubt, whether another person is enlightened. Certainly, most people, or at least a person with average perception can tell to some level what qualities another person is experiencing. But this is only an appearance. People may be good at "acting" to some extent, and it would follow that an unenlightened person can be fooled. People may be in particularly kind, compassionate moods, which are not indicative of their whole experience. In this way, a person may see the Buddha in someone who has not realized it within themselves yet.

It is only through the test of time, and through observation, that an unenlightened person might feel reasonably confident that another person is enlightened. People have described being "in the presence of a master", yet this may also happen in the presence of a shill. The mind works off predetermined variables, and so can be tricked.

If it were important (for that reason), these qualities should be looked for:

Having the ability to speak plainly
Having kindness and compassion towards the self and others

Not having anger/anxiety/frustration/etc.
Not having the desire to kill others
Not having the desire to take others possessions
Not having the desire to be less than truthful
Not wasting sexual energy on a constant quest for gratification
Not wasting mental/emotional energy on excessive drug use

All other qualities can be traced to that list, and that list could be further shortened though it would loose it's descriptive power.

But, perhaps there should be little concern for shaping an ability to "detect enlightened people". Rather the goal should be to aspire to those qualities through both mundane life and meditative practice. Wanting to know who the enlightened people are without being enlightened is really a diversion, and a lot of unenlightened people have made a lot of money off of this desire. Rather than looking for an enlightened person, a person should aspire to be That.
